Most homeowners dream of creating a space that feels fresh, stylish, and undeniably “wow.” But after the excitement comes the hesitation about the cost. The truth is, renovation isn’t cheap, and undoing a poorly executed makeover is even costlier. That’s why design experts stress the importance of thoughtful planning, smart investments, and playing with bold accents in ways that feel both expressive and manageable.
Instead of revamping everything at once, focus on high-impact elements like wall finishes or statement furniture. According to architect Smita Vijaykumar, Founder of ReNNovate Interiors, the magic lies in breaking down a room visually. “The secret to a great look lies in how you visually break down a room. Half of a room’s overall appearance comes from what’s at eye level. The remaining half is split evenly between the floor and the ceiling. To make a big impact, concentrate on the most visible parts of the room: the walls and major furniture pieces", she says.

Not every makeover needs carpenters or contractors. Sometimes, it’s about introducing a single bold note.
“For a subtle refresh, simply add an accent colour that makes up about 10% of the area. This pop of colour can come from cushions, throws, rugs, or a vibrant new curtain,” explains Vijaykumar.
This trick works especially well in rental homes or for those who want flexibility, as the boldness can be dialed up or down with minimal effort.
Mid-Cost Drama
If you’re ready to stretch your budget, the payoff can be striking.
“For a mid-cost transformation, start with basic upgrades and then elevate the design with a statement wall. Install a louvered, WPC, or 3D panel and coat it with bold textured paint. A chandelier adds drama, while wall lights and plants tie everything together,” says Vijaykumar.
This approach is perfect for creating a focal point without going into full-scale renovation mode. A statement wall grounds the room, while thoughtful lighting enhances the mood.
Going All Out
For those embracing boldness fully, dramatic transformations can redefine a space. Think striking false ceilings, marble wall panels, and layered textures for richness and depth.
“Play with a combination of textures on walls and fabrics. A 3D rendering helps visualize the final look before committing,” suggests Vijaykumar.

No matter how bold you go, a neutral foundation ensures balance and allows accents to shine.
“For a fall-inspired style, incorporate warm tones like burnt sienna, tan, orange, or rust. In a Japandi theme, pair cane and rattan with textured off-white walls and beige furniture, then add muted orange accents in fabrics. A few black-and-white elements complete the look,” she says.
For added drama, consider marble walls, 3D panels, statement lighting, and artwork to create layers of personality and sophistication.
