Recently, Jaya Bachchan shared candid thoughts about her marriage to Amitabh Bachchan and her occasionally complex relationship with the media, giving fans a rare and personal glimpse into her life.
The seasoned actress reminded everyone why she is still regarded as one of Bollywood's most respected voices by combining warmth, humor, and honesty in her speech at the We The Women event.
Talking about Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan opened up about the contrasts in their personalities that, she believes, have kept their bond strong for decades.
“The best thing I like about him is his discipline. I am a big one for discipline. I am a very strict mother,” she said.
She went on to explain that Big B is far more reserved than she is, keeping his opinions to himself while choosing the perfect moment to express what he feels.
“He does not speak. He is not free with his opinion like I am. He keeps it to himself, but he knows how to convey what he wants, at the right time, in the right way… which I don’t! That’s the difference. He is a different personality, maybe that’s why I married him!”
With her trademark humour, she added a playful twist: “Can you imagine if I had married somebody like me? He would be in Vrindavan and I would be somewhere else!”
From their on-screen hits like Silsila, Zanjeer, Abhimaan, and Sholay to countless memories off-screen, the couple’s journey together continues to inspire.
Jaya also didn’t shy away from sharing her frustrations with paparazzi, making a sharp distinction between professional journalists and intrusive photographers.
“My relationship with media is fantastic. I am the product of media. But my relationship with paparazzi is zero. Who are these people? Are they trained to be representing the people of this country? You call them media? I come from media. My father was a journalist. I have tremendous respect for such people,” she said.
She went further, venting in her inimitable style about the lack of professionalism she sees in paparazzi: “But yeh jo bahar gande, tight pant pehnke, hath mein mobile leke (they wear cheap, tight pants and have a mobile in their hand), they think just because they have a mobile, they can take your picture and say what they want. And, the kind of comments they pass! What kind of people are these people? Kahan se aate hain, kis tarah ka education hai? Kya background hai? They will represent us? Just because they can get through to YouTube or whatever social platform?”
