Don’t let dengue ruin your holiday plans, travel safe during the monsoon season

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral illness caused by the dengue virus, which is transmitted primarily through the Aedes aegypti mosquito. This virus is known for causing a flu-like illness that can escalate to more severe conditions like dengue hemorrhagic fever or dengue shock syndrome.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), dengue fever is spread through the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito. These mosquitoes become infected when they feed on the blood of a person already infected with the dengue virus. The virus then replicates in the mosquito, which can transmit it to other humans through subsequent bites.

To safeguard yourself from dengue fever while traveling, follow these essential tips:

Check warnings: Review local travel warnings and health notices for your destination. For example, if you’re traveling to a certain place, check the latest travel advisories from the CDC or WHO for alerts on dengue outbreaks and mosquito activity.

Pre-travel care: Visit a travel clinic or healthcare provider for advice and vaccinations. Schedule an appointment with a travel clinic at least 6-8 weeks before your trip to discuss vaccinations and preventive measures against dengue.

Pack wisely: Bring EPA-approved insect repellent and acetaminophen (paracetamol) for managing fever and pain. Pack a repellent. Include tablets for managing any potential fever, along with a basic first aid kit that includes bandages, antiseptic wipes, and tweezers.

Avoid bites: Book a stay at a hotel with air conditioning and window screens. If you are staying in a more rustic setting, use a bed net and apply repellent to exposed skin and clothing.

Monitor health: Seek medical attention if you develop a fever or symptoms like, sudden high fever and joint pain after returning from a dengue-prone area.

Repellent use: After returning from a trip to a dengue-endemic region, continue applying repellent for 3 weeks. If you develop any symptoms like rash or persistent fever within 2 weeks, consult a doctor and mention your recent travel.
