If you are fighting acne, the battle can be frustrating with no end at sight. Whether you’re a teenager experiencing hormonal acne or an adult dealing with unexpected flare-ups, the journey to clear skin can be overwhelming. With so many products, routines, and opinions out there, it’s easy to feel lost about what works and what doesn’t. While there’s no magic cure that works overnight, the good news is that achieving clearer skin is possible.

Let’s look at everything you need to know about clearing acne—because everyone deserves to feel confident in their skin.

  • Develop a routine skincare regimen

A good skincare routine is the basis of caring for acne. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends gentle, consistent skincare to reduce inflammation and promote healing.

Clean your face twice daily with a gentle, non-comedogenic cleanser to ensure you remove dirt, oil, and makeup without causing irritation to your skin. For skin that is acne-prone, look for cleansers that contain acne-fighting properties such as salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide.

Moisturise daily, even if you have oily skin, because hydration prevents the breakdown of the barrier function of the skin. Choose oil-free, lightweight moisturisers to prevent clogging pores.

Finally, don't forget sunscreen: broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher protects your skin from UV damage and prevents acne scars from darkening.

  • Use acne-fighting ingredients

Using products with active ingredients can make a big difference in treating acne. Research conducted and published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Dermatology reveals that benzoyl peroxide and retinoids are effective for treating acne.

Benzoyl peroxide kills acne-causing bacteria and reduces inflammation. Salicylic acid opens pores by removing dead skin cells and limiting the formation of oil in the pores. Retinoids, which are a form of vitamin A, will eventually help prevent pores from getting clogged and enhance skin texture. Tea tree oil, being a natural treatment, is an antimicrobial and helps reduce of mild acne.

  • Healthy diet

What you eat has a great deal to do with your skin. A review in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology highlights the role of diet in managing acne and recommends focusing on whole, nutrient-rich foods for better skin health.

High-glycaemic foods such as sweet food and drinks, as well as dairy products, are known to trigger outbreaks in some people. Reduce these from your diet and bring in anti-inflammatory foods like omega-3-rich salmon, walnuts, and antioxidant-packed fruits and vegetables.

Hydration is just as important because it flushes toxins out and keeps the skin moist.

  • Avoid common acne triggers

Certain habits and environmental factors can exacerbate acne. Dirty pillowcases and towels can transfer oil and bacteria to your skin, so washing them regularly is essential. Touching your face frequently can also introduce dirt and germs, further aggravating acne. When it comes to makeup, choose non-comedogenic, oil-free products to prevent clogged pores.
  • Try over-the-counter treatments

Mild to moderate acne can often be managed with over-the-counter treatments. Look for gels, creams, or patches that contain active ingredients like salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, or sulphur. Hydrocolloid acne patches are especially helpful for reducing redness and protecting blemishes from picking. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, consistent use of these treatments can significantly reduce acne over time.
  • Avoid over-washing or scrubbing

While keeping your skin clean is important, over-washing or using harsh exfoliants can do more harm than good. Dermatologists at the Cleveland Clinic also warn against over-exfoliation, which can damage the skin barrier and increase inflammation. Stripping the skin of its natural oils may lead to irritation and increased oil production, worsening acne. Instead, use a gentle cleanser and exfoliate only 1–2 times per week.

  • Manage stress

Stress is a known trigger for acne, as it causes hormonal fluctuations that can increase oil production and inflammation.  The American Psychological Association links stress to higher cortisol levels, which can exacerbate acne, emphasising the importance of stress management for clearer skin. Incorporating stress-reducing activities like yoga, meditation, or regular exercise into your routine can help keep your skin calm.
  • Consider professional treatments

If your acne doesn’t improve with at-home care, consulting a dermatologist can open up more advanced treatment options.
  • Be patient and consistent

Clearing acne requires time and dedication. Most skincare products and treatments take 6–8 weeks to show noticeable results, so consistency is key. Switching products too often or abandoning a routine prematurely can irritate your skin and hinder progress.

Clearing acne is a journey that involves a combination of consistent skincare, healthy lifestyle habits, and, in some cases, professional intervention. With patience, persistence, and the right approach, you can regain confidence in your complexion and enjoy lasting results.
