Recently, bollywood actress Fatima Sana Shaikh made her runway debut and walked as a showstopper for designer Nitya Birla's latest collection titled Ajrakh Goes Boho. Known for her powerful performances in films like Dangal, Sam Bahadur and Dhak Dhak, Shaikh perfectly embodied the essence of Gujarat’s vibrant and intricate designs in a gorgeous Indian outfit.

Fatima Sana Shaikh, with her strong screen presence and graceful demeanour, was the ideal muse for this collection. Her involvement not only highlighted the beauty of the designs but also underscored the collection's narrative—one that marries tradition with modernity. She wore a rich Ajarkh sari and paired it with matching strappy blouse and vintage jewellery for her runway appearance.

Designer Nitya’s collection was a modern homage to the traditional craft of Ajrakh, a centuries-old textile printing technique from the Kutch region. Reinterpreting the exquisite craft by infusing it with a fresh bohemian twist, the designer captivated the audience with the rich heritage craft fused with contemporary sensibilities.

“I'm glad to share this beautiful craft of Kutch through celebrity Fatima Sana Shaikh and deliver the story of my Ajrakh craftsmen to the world,” said designer Nitya Birla in a press statement. Whereas, Fatima Sana Shaikh shared her delight on social media and wrote, “Feeling like a ‘BohoPrincess’ as I unveil  #AjrakhGoesBoho” (SIC)

A modern tribute to Ajrakh

For the designer, the runway turned into an eclectic canvas of vibrant hues like moss green, turmeric, sand, and ecru —bringing to life the rich tradition of this handcraft with a modern flair. The collection seamlessly blended Ajrakh prints with bohemian elements like crochet, pearls, and shells. Offering a perfect blend of traditional motifs and modern bohemian chic for modern brides and bridesmaids, the collection was a heartfelt homage to the artisans of Kutch, showcasing the art of hand printing in a contemporary light.

Today, many Indian designers are bringing Ajrakh into the contemporary fashion scene, blending it with modern elements to create stunning, versatile pieces. Here’s how you can style Ajrakh outfits to make a fashion statement that honors tradition while embracing modernity.

Ajrakh prints can be effortlessly incorporated into casual wear for a chic, bohemian look. Pair an Ajrakh printed top with high-waisted jeans or a denim skirt. Add a pair of ankle boots or flat sandals for a relaxed yet stylish outfit.

Use an Ajrakh scarf or shawl as an accessory to elevate a simple outfit. Drape it over a plain white tee and jeans, or use it as a headwrap for an eclectic touch.

Incorporate Ajrakh into your work wardrobe for a sophisticated, cultural twist. Pair an Ajrakh blazer with tailored pants or a pencil skirt. Keep the rest of your outfit neutral to let the intricate designs stand out. An Ajrakh printed dress can be perfect for the office. Opt for knee-length dresses with simple silhouettes, and pair them with classic pumps and minimal jewellery.

Ajrakh outfits are ideal for festive occasions, offering a blend of tradition and modern glamour. Choose Ajrakh saris or lehengas with vibrant colours and detailed patterns. Pair them with statement jewelry, such as jhumkas (traditional Indian earrings) and bangles, to complete the festive look.

Add an Ajrakh dupatta to a plain kurta set for an instant festive upgrade. The rich patterns will add depth and elegance to your outfit.
