Cancer treatment is not just about drugs and scans; it is also about hours that slowly disappear. Clinics visits turn into whole-day affairs, calendars empty out, and life is put on hold.
On World Cancer Day 2026, Dr Aditya Sarin, Consultant Medical Oncologist at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Delhi, talks to Money control about how, during their course of treatment, patients begin to feel punished by the process, not supported by it. “One of my patients once said, 'I fight cancer on Tuesdays, but I lose my week preparing for it,'" he says.
Multiple studies on patients describe what researchers now call time toxicity and treatment burden. Research shows cancer care disrupts employment, finances and family roles, while anxiety and depression rise alongside appointment frequency and treatment complexity, affecting both patients and caregivers.
In India, says Dr Sarin, late diagnosis and limited routine screening, especially in lung cancer, funnel patients into already stretched urban tertiary hospitals. With over 1.4 million new cancer cases reported in 2022, the pressure on infrastructure and specialists is no longer theoretical; it is deeply personal. “Many families are effectively forced to relocate for months. That displacement adds emotional and financial weight long before treatment even begins,” the oncologist informs.
Dr Sarin shares reasons why cancer care feels overwhelming:
Treatment days routinely consume the entire week, with travel, queues and consultations stacking up. Patients juggle files, scans and venous access attempts, while caregivers lose wages and stamina, turning care into a logistical marathon rather than a medical encounter.
Specialist oncology remains concentrated in big-city tertiary centres, forcing families to migrate temporarily for care. Long journeys, crowded wards and stretched staff amplify delays, costs and exhaustion, particularly as cancer incidence rises faster than system capacity.

Emotional labour shadows every appointment. PubMed studies repeatedly show anxiety, depression and caregiver burnout increasing with treatment intensity, while patients report stolen time with loved ones, where hospital schedules quietly replace birthdays, workdays and ordinary, grounding routines.
Side effects rewrite daily life. Fatigue, nausea, hair loss and appetite changes disrupt sleep, employment and relationships, shaping how patients perceive treatment itself. When living feels paused, motivation falters, adherence wobbles and recovery becomes harder to sustain.
Shorter, simpler treatment formats, including rapid subcutaneous injectables, and decentralised care closer to home could return hours, dignity and emotional space to patients. “Simplification,” says Dr Sarin, “is not convenience, it is compassionate, clinically sound care.”
1. What challenges do cancer patients face during treatment?
Cancer patients often struggle with time consumption, financial strain, and emotional stress. Treatment days can consume whole weeks, and the logistical demands can overwhelm both patients and caregivers.
2. How does cancer care affect patients' daily lives?
Cancer care can significantly disrupt daily routines, employment, and family roles, causing anxiety and depression to increase with more frequent and complex treatments.
3. What is 'time toxicity' in cancer treatment?
Time toxicity refers to the extensive time commitment required for cancer treatment, which can disrupt patients' lives and lead to feelings of being punished by the process.
4. Why do cancer patients need to travel for treatment?
Specialist oncology services are mostly available in major cities, necessitating temporary relocation for many families, which adds emotional and financial burdens.
5. Are there any advances in cancer treatment that could help reduce these burdens?
Recent innovations like shorter, simpler treatment formats and decentralised care options can help reduce the time, logistical, and emotional burdens on patients, offering more dignified and compassionate care.
