For cancer patients, care is not only about treating the body, but also about supporting the mind. For women diagnosed with early breast cancer, the journey can bring emotional uncertainty alongside medical decisions, including fears around risk of recurrence and impacts on quality of life.
While advances in early detection and therapies have significantly improved survival rates, many patients continue to face anxiety, stress, and emotional vulnerability throughout treatment and recovery.
Dr Prasad Narayanan, Lead Consultant Medical and Hemato Oncology, Manipal Hospital, Yelahanka, Bangalore, tells Moneycontrol, “Treatment for breast cancer can place a significant physical and emotional burden on patients, whether it is the demands of repeated hospital visits or changes in appearance such as hair loss or surgery. These experiences often heighten feelings of anxiety and fear around risk of recurrence and quality of life. Today, evolving treatment approaches may help ease some of these challenges, enabling patients to pay greater attention to their emotional well-being. In parallel, support systems such as counselling, peer groups, and mindfulness practices can play a meaningful role in helping patients cope.”

Here are 5 ways to manage mental well-being while living with early breast cancer:
Treatment options come with varying side effects, such as hair loss with chemotherapy, which can be a source of emotional distress. It’s important to discuss with your doctor the treatment that best fits your emotional and physical needs, including how it may influence risk of recurrence and quality of life.
The fear of cancer returningcan feel overwhelming, but talking openly with your doctor about everything necessary to reduce that risk — including exploring advanced therapies — can restore hope for the future. Newer therapies, such as targeted treatments and immunotherapies, have shown potential to reduce recurrence risk by nearly 30 per cent compared to conventional options, while also addressing side effects like diarrhoea and fatigue that disrupt daily life and prevent women from feeling normal.
Talking to a therapist or counsellor can offer crucial emotional guidance tailored to your unique needs. Mental health professionals provide coping tools to manage fears, uncertainties, and emotional overwhelm in a safe and supportive environment.

Sharing your journey with others who face similar challenges can provide a sense of comfort and empowerment. Support groups create a space for exchanging experiences, coping strategies, and encouragement, helping to alleviate feelings of isolation.
Techniques like meditation and mindfulness encourage you to stay present, helping to calm feelings of stress and anxiety. By focusing on your breathing, your body, or your surroundings, you can create moments of peace amidst the emotional turbulence. Activities like yoga or even a few mindful breaths can help reduce anxiety during tough times.
