Lung cancer continues to be a leading cause of cancer-related morbidity and mortality worldwide, leading to millions of deaths annually. It is particularly dangerous because this cancer type often goes unnoticed until it has reached a late stage. Yet, keeping a check on early symptoms and taking preventive steps can lower your risk dramatically.
Dr Arjun Khanna, leading pulmonologist and founder of Horizon Medical Institute, says that prevention of lung cancer lies in early detection and changes in lifestyle to eliminate risk factors. He adds, “Though smoking is the biggest cause, other environmental pollutants also play important parts. However, if you identify the symptoms early, you can significantly lower the odds of contracting this deadly disease."

- Chronic cough: A persistent cough that lasts more than 2–3 weeks shouldn't be overlooked.
- Blood in cough: Any level of blood in sputum or mucus you cough up from lungs is a major red flag.
- Chest pain: Chest Pain that increases while taking a deep breath or coughing should be checked.
- Unintentional weight loss: Rapid, unexplained weight loss could be a sign of cancer.
- Extreme fatigue and weakness: Feeling tired all the time without a good explanation can be a red flag.
- Chronic Pneumonia: If you have frequent bronchitis or pneumonia, it could be a sign of lung disease.
- Hoarse voice or voice changes: Persistent hoarseness could be a sign of lung cancer affecting the vocal cords.

- Quit smoking: One of the biggest threats to those who are suffering from Lung cancer.
- Get your home tested for radon: Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer.
- Follow healthy, balanced diet: Eat fruits, vegetables wealthy in strong antioxidants to maintain your lungs in good shape.
- Get yourself screened regularly: Low-dose CT scans are recommended for high-risk individuals (smokers or family history).
Says Dr Khanna, "Lung cancer isn't a sudden event, but the accumulated effect of many years of risk exposure. Prevention is the key and the earlier you act the better your chances of avoiding any health related issues."
