If you find it difficult to switch off from work over the weekend, if your work keeps following you no matter what day of week it is, you need these strategies that will help you disconnect over weekends and make the most of your downtime.

Corporate work cultures now expect you to be answerable all the time, even on weekends, but if you set clear boundaries and, for instance, let your office know that you won’t be available during the weekend, you will be able to maintain a healthy work-life balance, prevent burnout and be freshly charged on Mondays.

Planning something fun in advance with friends and family on the weekend also helps focus on your personal relationships instead, so does limiting screen time.

If you often find yourself unable to disconnect from work over the weekends, here are some tips that can help.

  • Set clear boundaries

One of the most effective ways to disconnect from work is by setting firm boundaries between your work time and personal time. This can help you mentally transition into weekend mode and leave work-related thoughts behind. Disable email and work-related app notifications, and if necessary, let your colleagues or boss know that you won’t be available during the weekend, and if anything urgent comes up, they can reach you on Monday.

  • Plan your weekend in advance

Having a plan for your weekend can help you make the most of your time off. While you don’t need to schedule every hour, having some fun activities or relaxation time lined up can prevent you from defaulting to work tasks or thinking about the office. Trying new activities, hobbies, or even visiting a new place can keep your mind engaged in the present moment and away from work thoughts. Plan time with family or friends to disconnect from work and focus on your personal relationships.
  • Unplug from technology

Make a conscious effort to limit your screen time and avoid checking work emails or messages. Designate “tech-free” hours when you’ll completely unplug from work devices—this could be during meals, in the morning, or before bed. Instead, try engaging in offline activities such as cooking, exercising, or gardening.
  • Focus on self-care

Weekends are the perfect time to prioritise self-care and recharge both mentally and physically. Whether it’s through exercise, relaxation, or indulging in a favourite hobby, self-care can leave you feeling refreshed for the week ahead.
  • Create a “no work” zone

Designate a specific area of your home as a “no work” zone, where work-related items, laptops, and even discussions about work are off-limits. This space can be your sanctuary to fully relax and focus on yourself or your loved ones.
  • Engage in hobbies

Reignite your passion for hobbies that bring you joy and have nothing to do with work. Whether it’s painting, cooking, playing a sport, or learning something new, hobbies are a great way to fully immerse yourself in something fun and fulfilling. Just like you would schedule meetings during the workweek, schedule time for your hobbies over the weekend. Make them a social activity by involving loved ones. This creates positive experiences and helps you stay connected.

  • Practice gratitude and reflect

Before the weekend ends, take time to reflect on what you’re grateful for and how you spent your time. Practicing gratitude helps shift your focus from work stress to the positive aspects of your life, helping you recharge emotionally. It could be writing down three things you’re grateful for or reflecting on your weekend activities and how they made you feel. This can help reinforce positive habits for the next weekend.

Disconnecting from work on weekends isn’t just about taking a break; it’s about giving yourself the time and space to recharge, relax, and reset. Remember, a well-rested mind and body are essential for long-term productivity and happiness.
