Fatty liver disease is rapidly becoming a growing concern, affecting millions worldwide, including younger populations. Recently, television actor Mohsin Khan (32), known for his role as Kartik Goenka in the TV serial Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, revealed in an interview that he suffered a mild heart attack last year. The actor disclosed that the main cause of his heart attack was fatty liver disease, a condition he was unaware of until it nearly cost him his life.
Fatty liver disease is a critical indicator of your metabolic health. This disease has undergone a significant transformation in how it’s understood and classified, reveals Dr Harshavardhan Rao B, Senior Consultant at the Department of Medical Gastroenterology, Ramaiah Memorial Hospital, Bengaluru. “The disease is often misunderstood. Formerly known as Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), the condition is now referred to as Metabolic Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD)” he adds, and continues, “This change underscores the condition's strong link to metabolic dysfunction. Fatty liver isn’t just a liver issue, it reflects deeper problems with metabolic processes like insulin resistance, cholesterol management, and blood pressure regulation that need urgent attention."
Widespread prevalence:
In the Indian subcontinent, fatty liver disease is alarmingly common, affecting 20-30 percent of the population. “The condition typically begins with disordered insulin production and insulin resistance, often the result of poor lifestyle choices over time. Many people are unaware they have fatty liver until it leads to more severe health problems," says Dr Rao.
Dietary culprits:
Diet plays a central role in the development of fatty liver disease. “High intake of carbohydrates, refined foods, and unhealthy fats contributes to weight gain, particularly in areas of the body that are metabolically active, such as the abdomen.” he says. This fat accumulation can lead to fatty liver over time. "Our current dietary habits are a major factor in the rise of this condition," Dr Rao warns. "Reducing the intake of these unhealthy foods and focusing on a balanced diet rich in whole foods is essential for prevention."
Sedentary danger:
Alongside poor dietary habits, a sedentary lifestyle significantly contributes to the development of fatty liver disease, says Dr Rao. “The modern work culture, particularly the prevalence of IT jobs and work-from-home arrangements, has led to a decrease in physical activity. Prolonged sitting and lack of exercise worsen insulin resistance and promote fat accumulation in the liver," he explains. Including regular physical activity, such as walking, cycling, or strength training, can help counteract these effects.
Cardiac risks:
Fatty liver disease isn’t confined to liver health; it has broader implications, particularly for cardiovascular health. “The presence of fatty liver disrupts the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar, increasing the risk of heart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular events. Also, fatty liver can set off a chain reaction of health problems, particularly affecting the heart," Dr. Rao says, adding, "It’s crucial to address this condition early to prevent these serious outcomes."
Proactive steps:
Fatty liver disease serves as a warning that your metabolic health is compromised. By making informed lifestyle changes, such as improving your diet, staying active, and regularly monitoring your health, you can prevent the progression of fatty liver and reduce your risk of related diseases. He advises, "Taking control of your health now is key. Small changes in your daily routine can make a significant difference in preventing serious health issues in the future.
