Speech delay in children: How to spot early signs, improve toddler speech naturally

Did you notice that your toddler isn’t speaking as much as other children of their age? It’s a worry many parents share. Speech and language delays are more common than most think. However, while comparing milestones is natural, every child follows their own pace. And in many cases, with early support, children thrive.

“For many families, this delay causes worry and confusion. It’s easy to compare milestones with other toddlers and wonder, 'why isn’t my child talking yet'?” says Dr Rajiv Mishra, Senior Consultant Speech and Language Therapist at Madhukar Rainbow Children’s Hospital. “Speech and language delays are more common than most realise, and with the right knowledge and support, children can overcome these early hurdles,” he says.

Additionally, Dr Mishra explains that late talkers are children in the bracket of 18 to 30 months, who are developing typically in all areas, except in their spoken words. “By two years, a child should ideally be using 50 words and starting to combine them,” he says. “If that isn’t happening, it may be a sign they need extra support.”

There’s no single reason behind delayed talking. “Genetics, frequent ear infections, too much screen time, or even reduced one-on-one interaction can all play a role,” suggests Dr Mishra. In some cases, he says, the delay might also be linked to developmental conditions like autism or language disorders.

Signs that your child might be a late talker:

Dr Mishra suggests that parents could look out for certain signs that may indicate their child is a late talker. “These include having limited spoken words between 18 to 24 months, not starting to combine words by the age of two, and showing a good understanding of language but struggling to express themselves verbally,” he says, and adds that children may get visibly frustrated when trying to communicate or may rely more on gestures and pointing rather than using words.

Tips for parents:

  • Spend time together: Dr Mishra encourages turning everyday routines into language-rich experiences. “You don’t need flashcards or special apps. Mealtimes, bath time, or a walk in the park, all these can become moments of learning,” he says. He suggests narrating what you’re doing, naming objects, and waiting expectantly for a response.

  • Reduce screen time, increase face time: “Excessive screen exposure is one of the most common contributors. Screens talk at children, but they don’t wait or respond. What children really need are back-and-forth conversations, even if they’re not yet answering with words,” says Dr Mishra.

  • Consider early speech therapy: If your child is showing signs of delay, early intervention can make a significant difference. “Therapy at this stage is playful and engaging. We use toys, songs, and interactive games to build vocabulary and confidence.," he says.

  • Tools that support communication: While waiting for spoken language to catch up, alternatives like sign language or picture boards can help. “These tools don’t delay speech. In fact, they reduce frustration and often encourage verbal attempts,” the expert says.

  • When to seek professional support: “If you’re worried, don’t wait. An evaluation doesn’t mean something is wrong, it’s about understanding how your child learns and communicates,” suggests Dr Mishra.
