The rains may bring relief from scorching heat, but they also carry a host of household headaches, from leaks and damp corners to buzzing mosquitoes and lurking cockroaches. A monsoon-ready home isn’t just about staying dry, it’s also about keeping your living space hygienic and pest-free.

"Taking preventive steps before the rains get heavy is key to avoiding infestation and long-term damage,” says Subrata Pal, Head of Public Health Business at UPL SAS. Monsoons, says Pal, increase the risk of vector-borne diseases and structural damage, especially if stagnant water, cracks, or moisture find a way in. “Pests like mosquitoes, termites, and cockroaches thrive during this season, and if your home isn’t sealed properly, they’ll find a way in. Rising humidity also invites mould and musty smells, making it essential to start preparation early. Thankfully, most of this can be prevented with a bit of diligence, some smart storage changes, and the right pest control measures, many of which are safer and more eco-conscious than ever,” Pal says.

From using lemongrass-based sprays to installing screens and cleaning hidden corners, it’s now easier to defend your home without relying on harmful chemicals. “By breaking it down into weekly tasks and making smarter choices, your monsoon season can be more peaceful than panicked," he suggests.

Pal shares some effective remedies to keep pests and infections at bay, and also keep your home safe:

  • Remove water breeding spots: Clean gutters, drains, and planters to avoid water build-up. Turn over or discard items like tyres, flowerpots, or buckets. Fogging hidden areas can reduce mosquito breeding.

  • Fix roof leaks and cracks: Check for loose roof tiles and wall gaps. Seal them before the rains worsen damage. Moisture through walls attracts termites, products like Banest 20 can help safeguard your space.

  • Upgrade your window barriers: Check and fix all screens and door seals. Mosquito nets and insect barriers should be your first defence. Damaged nets must be replaced before the heavy rains begin.

  • Clean and declutter storage: Pests hide in cardboard boxes and old papers. Shift to plastic containers and clean storage spaces like attics and storerooms thoroughly to cut down their hiding spots.

  • Try safe pest control solutions: Use plant-based repellents with eucalyptus or lemongrass oils. Choose options that are child-safe, non-toxic, and eco-friendly. These offer protection without releasing harsh chemicals into your living space.

  • Organise your kitchen storage: Humidity spoils dry goods faster. Store lentils, grains, and flours in airtight containers. Use solutions like Ensurica to keep cockroaches away from food prep areas.

  • Install exhaust fans: Bathrooms and kitchens collect the most moisture. Exhaust fans can reduce dampness, prevent mould, and improve air circulation. They’re especially helpful during extended rainy spells.

  • Do a pre-monsoon deep clean: Thoroughly clean damp-prone areas before the rains make it harder. Pay attention to corners, tile grouts, and sinks where mould and grime can thrive quickly.

  • Keep a weekly checklist: Make a reminder for drain checks, moisture inspection, and pest control. “A little weekly effort goes a long way in avoiding expensive damage later,” advises Pal.
  • Stay stocked with safe solutions: Have recommended pest-control products like Disect TC or Adept WP on hand. Using the right treatment early can prevent a full-blown infestation later in the season. Get your home fumigated.
