Your fridge might be stocked with items that, despite their convenience and taste, are detrimental to your health. Many common foods found in the fridge are laden with hidden sugars, unhealthy fats, and excessive calories, which can contribute to poor dietary habits and elevate health risks. Regular consumption of such items can undermine your health goals, making it essential to scrutinise what you keep in your refrigerator.

Here are 8 foods items that should never be put in a refrigerator, according to Delhi-based nutritionist and the founder of Health Fit, Aakriti Kakkar.

Flavoured yoghurt: This often come loaded with sugar—sometimes three times more than plain yoghurt. This added sugar contributes to empty calories that can lead to weight gain and increased risk of metabolic diseases. Instead, opt for plain yoghurt and add your own fresh fruits and nuts for a healthier, nutrient-dense alternative.

Ketchup: Surprisingly high in sugar, with about 4 grams per tablespoon. This added sugar can contribute to obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. A healthier option is to use homemade marinara sauce, which can provide similar flavour with significantly less sugar.

Mayonnaise: It is calorie-dense, with nearly 94 calories per tablespoon, primarily from fat. Regular consumption can lead to weight gain and increased cholesterol levels. Swap it for Dijon mustard, which has far fewer calories and can add a tangy flavour to your dishes without the extra fat.

Flavoured non-dairy creamer: These are often filled with sugar, artificial sweeteners, and processed ingredients like corn syrup and hydrogenated oils. These additives can negatively impact your metabolism and overall health. Milk or a small amount of real cream is a simpler and healthier choice for your coffee.

Soda: It is notorious for its high sugar content and empty calories. Consuming soda regularly can lead to obesity, type 2 diabetes, and other metabolic disorders. Replace soda with seltzer water flavoured with a splash of lemon or lime for a refreshing and healthier drink.

Processed meats: Processed meats like hot dogs are linked to an increased risk of colorectal and possibly stomach cancer due to their preservatives and high sodium content. They are also often high in unhealthy fats. Opt for fresh, unprocessed meats or plant-based protein alternatives to reduce health risks.

Frozen pizza: These are typically high in calories, saturated fat, and sodium. A single pizza can contain as much as 1,920 calories, 30 grams of saturated fat, and 5,040 milligrams of sodium, contributing to heart disease, high blood pressure, and obesity. Instead, stock your freezer with healthier options like frozen vegetables and homemade soups.

Beer: While moderate beer consumption might offer some health benefits, having it readily available can lead to overconsumption. Excessive alcohol intake is linked to various health issues, including liver disease and certain cancers. If you struggle to limit your intake, it’s best to avoid keeping beer in the fridge.
