Jasmine Bhasin suffers corneal damage due to contact lens: Do’s and don’ts of using contact lens

Television actor Jasmine Bhasin recently disclosed that she endured severe pain from corneal damage caused by contact lenses. The former Bigg Boss contestant experienced excruciating discomfort and temporary vision loss, which made it challenging for her to see. Despite the pain, she completed her work commitments that day but had to urgently visit a doctor due to the intense suffering and impaired vision. Medical examination revealed damage to her corneas, leading to the application of a protective bandage on her eyes. Bhasin expressed to the media, “I am experiencing a lot of pain. Doctors have informed me that recovery will take four to five days. Until then, I must take extra care of my eyes. It’s extremely difficult because I can’t see well and am struggling to sleep due to the discomfort.”

Her experience underscores the critical importance of proper contact lens care and regular eye check-ups. Noida-based ophthalmologists Ashish Bahl shares the dos and don’ts of using contact lens for the safety of your eyes.

Dos

Do wash hands: Always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before touching your contact lenses to prevent transferring bacteria and other contaminants.

Do follow instructions: Adhere to the manufacturer’s guidelines for cleaning, storing, and replacing your contact lenses to ensure they are safe and effective.

Do se recommended solutions: Use only the cleaning and storage solutions recommended by your eye care professional. Avoid using tap water or homemade solutions for cleaning lenses.

Do remove lenses before swimming: Take out your lenses before swimming or showering to protect them from exposure to waterborne bacteria and chemicals.

Do replace lens cases regularly: Clean and replace your contact lens case every 3-6 months to avoid bacterial growth and contamination.

Do schedule regular eye exams: Visit your eye care professional regularly to ensure proper lens fit, address any issues, and update your prescription as needed.

Do follow wearing schedule: Stick to the recommended wearing time for your lenses and give your eyes a break if needed. Use lenses as prescribed, whether daily, bi-weekly, or monthly.

Do store lenses properly: Keep your lenses in a clean, dry case with the appropriate solution to prevent contamination and preserve their condition.

Don’ts

Don’t over-wear lenses: Avoid wearing your contact lenses longer than the recommended time, including overnight wear unless they are designed for extended use.

Don’t use expired solutions: Never use expired cleaning or storage solutions, as they may be less effective and can increase the risk of eye infections.

Don’t use damaged lenses: If your lenses are damaged, cracked, or torn, do not use them. Discard them and replace them with a new pair to avoid eye injuries or infections.

Don’t rub your eyes: Avoid touching or rubbing your eyes, especially with unwashed hands, as this can irritate your eyes and introduce bacteria to your lenses.

Don’t sleep in lenses: Unless your lenses are specifically designed for overnight wear, remove them before sleeping to allow your eyes to breathe and prevent discomfort.

Don’t share lenses: Never share your contact lenses with others. Sharing lenses can transfer bacteria and increase the risk of eye infections.

Don’t use tap water: Avoid using tap water to rinse or store your lenses, as it can contain microorganisms that may cause infections.

Don’t ignore discomfort: If you experience discomfort, redness, or vision changes while wearing lenses, remove them immediately and consult your eye care professional. Ignoring these symptoms can lead to more serious issues.
