A hair transplant is a procedure that restores hair in bald or thinning areas by moving healthy hair follicles from one part of the scalp to another. Over time, these transplanted follicles grow naturally, blending with existing hair. Hair transplantation techniques vary, with some methods directly implanting hair follicles into the scalp to improve precision and natural results.
The real journey begins after the procedure, as proper scalp care is essential for healing, healthy hair growth, and long-term success, suggests Dr Deepak Choudhary, senior surgeon at DHI International Medical Group. “A hair transplant is just the first step. Hair growth usually starts within 3–4 months, with noticeable improvement between 6 to 12 months. However, winter’s cold, dry air can make post-transplant care more challenging by stripping the scalp of natural moisture, leading to dryness and irritation,” he explains.
Winter care, he adds, is crucial because reduced humidity and indoor heating can affect the healing process, making it essential to maintain moisture and follow a gentle scalp care routine. “Winter’s cold, dry air can make this process even more challenging by stripping the scalp of natural moisture, leading to dryness and irritation,” Dr Choudhary adds.

For smooth recovery and lasting results after a hair transplant, Dr Choudhary suggests the following winter scalp care tips:
Use a gentle, hydrating shampoo: Cleaning the scalp after a transplant requires extra care. Many regular shampoos contain sulfates, parabens, and artificial fragrances that can irritate the scalp and slow down healing. "Using a mild, hydrating shampoo helps maintain moisture levels while ensuring the scalp stays clean without causing irritation," says Dr Choudhary.
Hydration sprays: These are another important part of post-transplant care. "Hydrating sprays enriched with saline or soothing botanical ingredients help relieve dryness and keep the scalp nourished," he explains. Regular use, as advised by your specialist, can support healing, especially in winter when moisture loss is more common.
A proper hair-washing routine: This is just as important as using the right products. Overwashing can strip the scalp’s natural oils, while underwashing may lead to buildup and discomfort. "Washing every 2-3 days with lukewarm water and a mild shampoo helps maintain scalp health without disrupting the healing process," advises Dr Choudhary. Hot water should be avoided, as it worsens dryness and increases scalp irritation. "During the first few weeks after a transplant, be extremely gentle, rubbing or scrubbing can dislodge the grafts and impact results," he adds.
Protect your scalp from cold weather: Cold winds and freezing temperatures can constrict blood vessels in the scalp, slowing down circulation and delaying healing. "Always wear a soft, breathable hat or scarf to shield your scalp from harsh weather conditions," says Dr Choudhary. Loose-fitting cotton hats are ideal, as they prevent irritation and friction on the transplanted area. "Avoid tight hats or synthetic materials, as they can cause discomfort and excessive sweating, which is not good for the healing process," he advices.
Prioritise internal hydration and nutrition: Staying hydrated is just as important for scalp health as it is for your well-being. "Even in winter, drink at least 8-10 glasses of water daily to maintain the body’s moisture balance," suggests Dr Choudhary. A nutrient-rich diet also plays a vital role in recovery. "Eating foods rich in vitamins and minerals, such as leafy greens, citrus fruits, nuts, seeds, and lean proteins, supports hair growth and scalp health," he explains. Supplements containing biotin, zinc, and vitamin D can also aid in recovery, but always consult your doctor before taking any new supplements.

Make necessary lifestyle adjustments: Certain lifestyle choices can affect the recovery process after a hair transplant. "Smoking reduces blood circulation to the scalp, slowing down healing, while alcohol dehydrates the body, making the scalp drier," says Dr Choudhary. To maximise the effectiveness of the transplant, it’s best to avoid smoking and alcohol consumption during the recovery period. "A healthier lifestyle leads to better results and long-term hair health," he adds.
Consult your specialist when needed: If you experience persistent irritation, dryness, or discomfort despite following a proper care routine, it’s important to consult your hair transplant specialist. "Your doctor can recommend medicated lotions, specialised moisturisers, or specific treatments tailored to your scalp’s condition," says Dr. Choudhary.
