Chronic fatigue syndrome: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can help in managing symptoms. This includes eating a balanced diet, staying hydrated, and engaging in gentle, regular exercise such as walking or yoga if tolerated

Imagine waking up every day feeling like you have run a marathon, despite barely moving a muscle. Your body is arrested in a relentless fog of exhaustion, making even the simplest tasks feel like insurmountable challenges. This is the harsh reality for people fighting chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS).

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is an exhausting condition that robs you of your vitality and zest for life. Beyond the physical toll, CFS spreads through  every aspect of daily living, hindering productivity, straining relationships, and fueling frustration. Yet, amidst the darkness, there is hope,  as you can practice some coping strategies for relief.

According to Dr Vivek Barun, Consultant, Neurology & Epilepsy at Artemis Hospital Gurugram, living with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) can be very challenging. "It is because it often involves persistent exhaustion and a variety of other symptoms that can significantly hamper daily activities.’

Dr Barun suggests some coping strategies to addresses both physical and emotional well-being:

Acceptance and understanding: Accepting the reality of the condition is a crucial first step. Understanding that chronic fatigue syndrome is a legitimate medical condition can help people in avoiding self-blame and frustration.

Pacing: Learning to pace oneself is necessary for managing energy levels. This involves dividing tasks into manageable chunks and having rest periods to avoid exhaustion.

Prioritisation: Identify and prioritise activities based on their importance and energy requirements. Focus on important tasks and delegate or postpone less urgent ones.

Healthy lifestyle: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can help in managing symptoms. This includes eating a balanced diet, staying hydrated, and engaging in gentle, regular exercise such as walking or yoga.

Stress management: Stress can exacerbate symptoms of CFS. Practicing relaxation techniques like deep breathing, meditation, or mindfulness can help in reducing stress levels.

Sleep hygiene: Having good sleep habits can improve sleep quality, which is often disrupted in people with CFS. Maintain a consistent sleep schedule, create a relaxing bedtime routine, and ensure a comfortable sleep environment.

Social support: Don't hesitate to seek support from friends, family, or support groups who understand and empathize with the challenges of living with CFS. Connecting with people who share similar experiences can provide validation and emotional support.

Seek professional help: Consult healthcare professionals who are experienced in managing CFS for personalized treatment and support. This may include medications to manage symptoms, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to address psychological aspects, or alternative therapies such as acupuncture or massage.

Managing expectations: Adjusting expectations and setting realistic goals can help in preventing disappointment and feelings of failure. Celebrate small achievements and progress, even if they seem insignificant.

Self-care: Make self-care a priority by indulging in activities that bring joy and relaxation, whether it's reading, listening to music, spending time in nature, or pursuing hobbies.
