HFSS foods include a wide range of processed and packaged items designed to be highly appealing. They are crafted to excite taste buds with their sweet, salty, and fatty flavours, which can trigger addictive-like responses in the brain. What makes them concerning is not only their taste but also their harmful effects on your health.

Here are 7 reasons why HFSS food is unhealthy for you:

Caloric overload: HFSS foods are notorious for their high calorie content, contributing significantly to weight gain and obesity. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), obesity rates have nearly tripled since 1975, with HFSS foods playing a significant role in this alarming trend.

Nutrient deficiency: Despite their calorie density, HFSS foods often lack essential nutrients crucial for your health. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) highlights that diets high in sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats can lead to deficiencies in vitamins, minerals, and fibre, paving the way for various health ailments.

Chronic disease epidemic: Regular consumption of HFSS foods is closely linked to an increased risk of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, and hypertension. Research suggests the detrimental impact of excessive sugar and salt intake on heart health and metabolic function.

Addictive nature: HFSS foods possess addictive properties. The combination of sugar, salt, and fat stimulates the brain's reward system, similar to addictive substances like drugs. This stimulation can lead to heightened cravings, compulsive overeating, and challenges in portion as per ICMR. These behaviours not only contribute to weight gain but also increase the risk of obesity-related diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular issues.

Blood sugar roller coaster: High sugar content in HFSS foods can cause rapid spikes and subsequent crashes in blood glucose levels. This roller coaster effect not only affects energy levels and mood but also increases the risk of insulin resistance, a precursor to type 2 diabetes.

Oral health problems: Excessive sugar intake from HFSS foods is a primary contributor to dental caries and gum diseases. They stress the need for moderation to prevent tooth decay and keep gums healthy.

Disrupted eating patterns: A diet rich in HFSS foods often displaces nutrient-dense options, leading to imbalanced nutrition. This disruption in eating patterns can perpetuate a cycle of poor dietary choices, further exacerbating health issues related to obesity, malnutrition, and metabolic disorders.
