Ayurvedic remedies for eye health: Expert guide to prevent cortical visual impairment, uveitis

Inflammatory eye diseases, including uveitis, can affect people of all ages, potentially leading to severe vision loss if untreated. Here are some Ayurvedic treatment approaches for managing these conditions.

September is also a month for raising awareness about visual health, highlighting two significant observances: Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI) Awareness Month and Inflammatory Eye Disease Awareness Week. CVI is a leading cause of visual impairment in children, stemming from brain damage rather than issues with the eyes themselves. It challenges conventional understandings of blindness, emphasising the need for specialised care and education. Inflammatory eye diseases, including uveitis, can affect people of all ages, potentially leading to severe vision loss if untreated. These conditions underscore the importance of early detection, comprehensive treatment, and ongoing research to improve outcomes.

Ayurvedic treatment for uveitis and other inflammatory eye diseases typically involves a holistic approach that includes herbal remedies, dietary adjustments, lifestyle changes, and therapies designed to reduce inflammation and restore balance to the body. Rashmi Goyal, a BHMS-certified Ayurvedic practitioner, shares some Ayurvedic treatment approaches for managing these conditions:

Herbal remedies

Triphala: A blend of three fruits (Amalaki, Bibhitaki, and Haritaki), Triphala is often used in Ayurvedic medicine for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It can be taken internally or used as an eye wash.

Turmeric (Curcuma longa): it is well known for its potent anti-inflammatory properties, turmeric is used to reduce inflammation. Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, is particularly beneficial.

Guggulu (Commiphora mukul): An anti-inflammatory herb that helps reduce inflammation and support tissue healing.

Neem (Azadirachta indica): Often used for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, neem may help in managing infections and inflammation.

Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa): This herb is used to reduce swelling and inflammation in the eyes.

Chandraprabha Vati: A traditional Ayurvedic tablet that supports eye health and reduces inflammation.

Panchakarma therapies

Netra tarpana: A special Ayurvedic treatment where a pool of medicated ghee (clarified butter) is retained around the eyes to soothe and nourish the eyes. This therapy is often recommended for treating inflammatory eye diseases.

Anjana: Application of medicinal herbs in the form of a paste around the eyes to reduce inflammation and pain.

Nasya: Administration of medicated oils or powders through the nostrils to help clear blockages and reduce inflammation that might affect the eyes.

Dietary adjustments

Anti-inflammatory diet: Including foods that have a cooling effect and are anti-inflammatory, such as cucumbers, leafy greens, and bitter vegetables. Avoiding spicy, oily, and hot foods that may aggravate Pitta dosha, which is often associated with inflammation.

Increased hydration: Drinking plenty of water and herbal teas to help flush out toxins and maintain hydration.

Ghee consumption: Adding ghee to the diet can help reduce inflammation internally and provide essential fatty acids that support eye health.

Lifestyle changes

Stress management: Stress can exacerbate inflammatory conditions, so practices of yoga, meditation, and pranayama (breathing exercises) are recommended.

Adequate sleep: Ensuring proper rest and sleep to allow the body to heal and reduce overall stress on the eyes.

Preventive measures

Eye protection: Avoid direct exposure to bright lights, screens, and dust, which can aggravate inflammatory conditions.

Regular eye exercises: Engaging in eye exercises to strengthen the eye muscles and improve blood circulation to the eyes.

A personalised treatment plan based on your specific dosha type (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) and the root cause of the inflammation is crucial. A qualified Ayurvedic practitioner will be able to provide a tailored approach, which may include a combination of the above treatments.
