Monsoon season gives us some relief from that summer heat, but it also has a rise in infections - especially in the nose and respiratory tract! According to Dr Rishi Menon, ENT specialist based in Noida under the clinic name EnHeal, "The rain provides a unique environment for those bacteria, viruses, and fungi − it's hot and humid with fluctuating temperatures. These all result in nasal infections and sinus problems."
Here's what you need to know about nasal infections in monsoon.

Reasons for Nasal Infections during Monsoon
• Excess moisture: Humidity enables microorganisms to multiply abundantly.
• Allergens in the air: There is increased activity of mold, pollen and dust particles during this time.
• Poor air quality indoors: Areas with damp walls and closed spaces accumulate mold.
• Low immunity: The weather causes a sudden change that reduces our body’s defenses.
Typical signs of Nasal infections
• Nasal congestion & sinus pressure
• Head ache, primarily on or surrounding the forehead or area of cheeks• Mild fever and/or fatigue
• Loss of smell and/or taste
• Post-nasal drip (dripping of mucus draining in your throat
Preventions:
1.Keep Indoor Cleanliness: Monsoon moisture causes mold and bacteria to develop indoors, which may cause infection so either put a dehumidifier or keep windows slightly open during dry hours to promote movement of air. Clean fans, air conditioning vents, and drapes regularly. "Keep your living spaces clean and dry. Mold spores in the air are a sneaky trigger for chronic nasal issues,” says the expert.
2. Steam Inhalation: This age-old therapy is great for embarrassing your nasal passages and dampening inflammation. Steam inhalation with a pinch of turmeric or with eucalyptus oil for a few drops once or twice a day will give relief. "Steam inhalation helps loosen mucus and calms your irritated nasal linings so the infection does not escalate,” says Menon.
3.Fortify Immunity: A strong immune system is your best defense against infections and illness during the monsoon. Eat fruits high in vitamin C (like oranges and amla), include zinc and probiotics, and stay well-hydrated.
4. Avoid Getting Wet, Or Being Damp: If you are wet for prolonged periods or are in cold rain, you are more prone to infections. Dry off and change into dry clothes as soon as you get wet. Carry a raincoat or umbrella when you go out.
5. Gently Rinse Your Nose: Regular nasal rinsing helps to rinse-out allergens and microbes so rinse your nose with a saline solution or neti pot 2 - 3 times per week and in a hygienic way. Dr. Menon states: "Nasal irrigation is an under-valued but very effective way to reduce infections, especially during seasons of high risk."
