Do your knees ache after a simple walk around the block? Do you wake up with stiff, swollen joints that seem to resist movement until midday? These are the kinds of subtle changes that often go unnoticed but could be early signs of arthritis creeping in. While it’s easy to brush them off as the inevitable signs of aging or overexertion, recognising these symptoms early is key to managing the condition before it significantly impacts your life.
Arthritis refers to the inflammation of the joints, which causes pain, stiffness, swelling, and reduced movement. According to Dr Rohit Luthra, Orthopaedic and Joint Replacement Surgeon at Arcus Hospital, Pune, it affects people of all ages and can lead to chronic discomfort and disability if left untreated. “Arthritis comes in different forms, with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis being the most common. Osteoarthritis results from wear and tear, causing the cartilage in the joints to break down. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks the joints, leading to damage. Both types can limit mobility and make daily activities harder.”
Dr Luthra adds, “Arthritis affects the joints, causing pain, discomfort, and mobility issues. If detected early, arthritis can be managed effectively. Joint pain may be common, but it doesn’t have to limit your life.”

Innovations and technological advancements have transformed arthritis treatment, greatly enhancing patients’ quality of life, suggests Dr Luthra. “In the early stages, arthritis can often be managed with conventional and minimally invasive treatments, such as medications, corticosteroid injections, and arthroscopic procedures. For more severe cases, especially those involving the knees and hips, robotic arm-assisted technology has revolutionised joint replacement surgeries.” he adds.
These advanced techniques result in smaller scars, improved joint mobility, and faster recovery, offering hope for patients whose arthritis is too advanced for less invasive treatments.
