Superfoods are often heavily marketed and accompanied by a hefty price tag—but, not all superfoods are super. According to Dr Radhika Menon, a nutrition expert based out of Bengaluru, "Many superfoods can be overblown and expensive when comparable nutrition exists right in your local market, and often for less money."
Here’s a list of 10 superfoods that are overrated, and easy replacements!
Goji Berries → Amla (Indian Gooseberry) :Goji berries are often hailed as superfoods because of their high antioxidant content and immunity-boosting potential, but local amla is even higher in vitamin C, available year-round, and even a staple in Ayurvedic reasoning.

Quinoa → Millets (Ragi, Jowar, Bajra): Quinoa is laden with protein and fiber but is pricey and imported. Locally sourced millets like ragi, jowar, and bajra are just as nutritious and gluten-free, and good for heart health and gut health.
Chia Seeds → Sabja (Basil) Seeds : Chia seeds have become a staple in the health food industry because they are promoted for weight loss and hydration, but sabja seeds can provide similar benefits at a quarter of the cost--plus they swell faster and are a more efficient way to quell hunger.
Kale → Spinach: Kale gets label as the king of greens, but it is expensive and not common in many regions and countries. Spinach (palak) is just as high in iron, fiber, and antioxidants and is very versatile in Indian cooking!
Avocado → Banana: Avocados are popular for their healthy fats; however, they are expensive and contribute to a significant carbon footprint. Bananas have potassium, fiber, and energy without the price or the environmental footprint.
Almond Milk → Coconut Milk: Almond milk is a trendy dairy alternative, but it often contains added sugars and preservatives. Fresh organic coconut milk is a nutrient-rich powerhouse, naturally lactose-free, and a better choice for skin and immunity
Blueberries → Jamun (Indian Blackberry): Blueberries are well known for their antioxidants, but jamun, a seasonal fruit in India, provides many of the same health benefits in terms of blood sugar control and liver function, plus it's local and more affordable.
Matcha → Green Tea: While matcha is loaded with antioxidants and boosts metabolism, green tea has many of the same benefits, without the high price tag, and is widely available.
Acai Bowls → Seasonal Fruit Bowls: Acai bowls can be visually beautiful and full of fruits and toppings, but they are often full of sugar and a lot of money. An inexpensive bowl of seasonal fruits like papaya, guava, or watermelon can provide fiber, hydration, vitamins and plenty of nutrition without the sugar bomb.
Protein Bars → Roasted Chana or Peanuts: Protein bars can often have hidden sugars and preservatives that are not ideal. Roasted chana or peanuts are natural sources of protein and healthy fats and can be a healthy and low cost, satiating snack.
