Luke Newton recently shared his experience shooting intimate scenes for the third season of 'Bridgerton', where he portrays Colin Bridgerton. In a conversation with Deadline, Newton discussed the dynamics of his on-screen romance with Nicola Coughlan, who plays Penelope Featherington. Their longstanding friendship since season one contributed significantly to their comfort and chemistry during these romantic scenes, he revealed.
One scene that stands out in particular is the intimate carriage scene at the end of Part 1, which has quickly become a fan favourite. Newton provided insights into the filming this pivotal moment. “That scene encapsulates everything,” he said. “If you had to showcase Bridgerton as a whole, you could share that one scene, and it would explore everything that we cover. It explores friendship and romance; it’s sexy; it’s exposing; there are moments where they feel insecure.”
Newton highlighted that the scene also includes moments of comedy, where the characters share a giggle, adding layers to their interaction. Despite being only a five-minute scene, it was crucial to hit every emotional beat. The actor mentioned that both he and Coughlan were prepared for the carriage scene, knowing it was an essential part of their characters’ journey and the storyline.
Reflecting on the scene's significance, Newton remarked, “I feel like it’s written so perfectly that we finish the end of Part 1 at that point because it feels like a moment of relief and contentment, but actually, there’s the underlying story of Whistledown.” This suggests that while the scene provides a sense of closure, it also hints at deeper ongoing narratives.
Looking ahead to the rest of the season, Newton hinted at Colin Bridgerton's character development in Part 2. He spoke about Colin's evolving relationship with Penelope Featherington and the sense that something is amiss with Eloise and Ms Featherington. “It’s a really exciting chapter to step into. I always think of it as like a ringing in your ear. It’s constantly there, no matter how content they feel. We’ve still got drama to come,” he teased.
Newton's comments suggest that viewers can expect more depth and drama in Colin's storyline as 'Bridgerton' Season 3 progresses. Part 1 of the season is currently streaming on Netflix.
