Veteran filmmaker Subhash Ghai, who has been away from the director’s chair since 2022, has teased his next cinematic venture — and it comes with a surprising twist.

On Monday, Subhash Ghai took to Instagram to unveil a quirky announcement, hinting that actor Riteish Deshmukh might feature in his upcoming film in an unconventional role.

Sharing a still from Deshmukh’s 2006 comedy Apna Sapna Money Money, where the actor is dressed as a woman, Ghai captioned the post:

"She is our next heroine in our forthcoming film under Mukta Arts. A classic beauty. Can you guess the name of this beautiful girl? Please do write," sparking an immediate wave of speculation and amusement online.

Fans and industry colleagues alike flooded the comment section with guesses and reactions. Actor Mahima Chaudhry jokingly remarked, "That's Desh Mukh. What about Pardes Mukh?" — a cheeky nod to Subhash Ghai’s 1997 hit Pardes.

Instagram users were equally amused, with one commenting, "She's Riteshi. So cute. Picture definitely super hit hogi sir," while another added, "Wow, Ritesh Deshmukh in heroine role. Dekhana shandar hoga."

Many also recognised the origin of the image. "Apna Sapna Money Money movie scene. It was Riteish Sir’s superhit film and one of the best comedy scenes," read another comment.

Despite the buzz, it remains unclear whether Ghai is being playful or genuinely casting Deshmukh as the female lead in his next film.

Earlier this year, in an interview with trade analyst Komal Nahta, the 80-year-old filmmaker candidly reflected on why he had taken a step back from the industry:
"It’s just one thing, I don’t see love among people, I don’t see love in the team. I see everyone just working, poor things," he admitted.

He also recounted a frustrating encounter with a screenwriter. "Yes, I'll write it in 15 days, give the second draft in 3 days, then this and that.' He gave me all the dates and instalments. 'Your story will be ready in many days," Ghai recalled, adding with trademark wit, "I said, 'Are you making rotis or what?' because he gave me the whole thing with dates and instalments."

Subhash Ghai's most recent project was the 2022 movie 36 Farmhouse, which he both wrote and produced. He may be preparing for a creative comeback, which could be one of his most entertaining endeavours to date, according to his most recent social media post.
