SS Rajamapuli's RRR gets Oscars shoutout as academy launches ‘Best Stunt Design’ category

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has formally announced the addition of a brand-new category for the Oscars: Best Stunt Design. Honouring films released in 2027, this category will first feature at the 100th Academy Awards in 2028. Among the few movies underlined in this historic release was RRR, an internationally praised action epic directed by SS Rajamouli starring Ram Charan and Jr NTR.

The Academy's choice represents a major change in appreciating the art of action choreography and stunt work, a field long underappreciated in film production.

The Academy shared the update on Instagram saying, "Stunts have always been part of the beauty of filmmaking. These days, they feature in the Oscars.”

The Academy also unveiled a poster highlighting three outstanding films in honor of the new category: Michelle Yeoh's Everything Everywhere All At Once, Tom Cruise's Mission Impossible, and SS Rajamouli's RRR, a monument to the remarkable stunt work and influence on world cinema of this film.

The crew behind RRR was overjoyed with this accolades. Turning to social media, the official Twitter account for the movie answered: "THE PROUDEST MOMENT FOR ALL OF US." So happy the world keeps honoring #RRRMOVIE and its Action. Again and yet again.

This acknowledgement follows RRR's historic Oscar triumph in 2023, in which the film took home India's first-ever Oscar for Best Original Song for the vibrant single Naatu Naatu. Along with highlighting the music of the movie, that triumph raised awareness of its epic action set pieces, rich cultural narrative, and cinematic excellence all around. Hollywood elite including Danny DeVito, Edgar Wright, Russo Brothers, James Gunn, and Scott Derrickson praised the film, which starred Alia Bhatt, Ajay Devgn, and Shriya Saran in prominent parts.

David Leitch, director of Bullet Train, Deadpool 2, and The Fall Guy, who coordinated the initiative on behalf of the stunt community, introduced the Stunt Design category. Veteran stunt Coordinator Chris O'Hara joined him. Leitch said, in a joint statement, "This has been a hard road for so many of us... We stand on the shoulders of the stunt experts who have battled ceaselessly for acceptance over many years. We really thank you. thanks, Academy.

The Academy clarified that immediately prior of the 100th Academy Awards, in 2027, the specific eligibility and voting criteria for this new category will be made public. Especially, even if stunts have always been essential in films, only two stunt performers—Yakima Canutt in 1966 and Hal Needham in 2012—have ever been given honorary Oscars till now. This formal competitive category movement is a historic and fitting acknowledgement of their efforts.

This news follows the opening of another new Oscar category in 2024: Achievement in Casting—set to start from the 98th Academy Awards in 2025.
