The controversy surrounding actress Gouri Kishan has sparked a wave of solidarity across Tamil Nadu’s media and film fraternity.

Following the viral incident in which a journalist asked the actress an inappropriate question about her body weight during the press meet of her upcoming film Others, both the Chennai Press Club and the South Indian Artistes’ Association (Nadigar Sangam) have issued official statements condemning the behaviour and extending support to the actress.

In an official statement, the Chennai Press Club clarified that the person responsible for the inappropriate question was not a journalist, but a YouTuber. “The Chennai Press Club strongly condemns the behaviour of a YouTuber who posed an inappropriate question to actress Gouri Kishan regarding her body weight during the press meet of the film Others,” the statement read.

The press body further stressed the ethical responsibilities of those covering film events, noting that such conduct disrespects professional boundaries and the dignity of artists. “Raising questions aimed at mocking or humiliating a woman artist over her physical appearance, especially in a professional forum meant to discuss a film, is highly unethical, indecent, and condemnable,” it stated.

Praising Gouri Kishan for her composure and strength in responding to the incident, the statement added, “We appreciate actress Gouri Kishan for expressively and courageously voicing her objection even in the face of collective opposition.”

The South Indian Artistes’ Association (Nadigar Sangam) also issued a statement in solidarity with Gouri, standing firmly by her side. “We strongly condemn the incident that happened to our sister yesterday. We will begin the necessary steps to ensure that such incidents do not happen in the future,” the association said.

The incident, which took place during a promotional event for Others, triggered widespread outrage online, with fans, colleagues, and industry figures calling out the lack of decorum and the casual sexism often faced by women in public spaces.

Gouri Kishan, best known for her debut in 96 and acclaimed performances in Master and Beginning, has since received an outpouring of support from colleagues and social media users alike, who praised her for standing her ground and demanding respect.
