Netflix has officially cancelled That '90s Show after two seasons, actor Kurtwood Smith confirms

Netflix has officially cancelled That '90s Show after just two seasons, disappointing fans who had embraced the nostalgic sequel to That '70s Show.

The announcement came a little over a month after the release of Part 3 on August 22, 2024. Despite its heartfelt homage to the original series, Netflix has decided not to move forward with additional seasons.

The cancellation was confirmed by actor Kurtwood Smith, who played the iconic role of Red Forman in both the original and sequel series. Smith shared the news on Instagram, expressing his gratitude to the show’s loyal audience.

In his post, he wrote, “I know you have been asking me when season 3 is coming, but I have tough news…Netflix will not be renewing. I just want to take a minute to say THANK YOU to all of the fans everywhere who supported and watched the show. You have come up to me in random parts of the world when I’m traveling and reached out to me through social media and just been so wonderful. I’ve loved every minute of getting to bring Grandpa Red to life for you all."

"I’ve said it before but it’s worth mentioning again…this show had so much heart behind it and the most wonderful cast, writers, directors, producers and crew an actor could hope to work with. Thanks for letting Red and Kitty, their grandkid, all their grandkids friends and neighbors, the original cast members of That 70’s Show and all of our wonderful guest cast members entertain you for two seasons. To steal Red Forman’s words…we aren’t going to be dumbasses…we will shop the show, because good grandparents would try hard to get these kids graduated from high school. #That90sShow #bestfansever ” he added.

That '90s Show followed a similar revival format as other nostalgic sitcoms like Fuller House, blending familiar faces with a new generation of characters. Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp reprised their roles as Red and Kitty Forman, now grandparents raising a new group of teenagers during the summer of 1995.

The show featured guest appearances from original That '70s Show stars like Topher Grace, Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis, and Wilmer Valderrama, much to the delight of longtime fans.

The series was initially met with excitement, and Netflix had renewed it for a second season, which was released in two parts. However, despite its charm and a dedicated fanbase, That '90s Show ended its run after two seasons, leaving viewers hoping for its revival on another platform.
