In 2007, the film 'Chak De India!' was not only a massive hit but also a significant milestone in Indian cinema, particularly for its progressive handling of its cast. The movie, starring Shah Rukh Khan, became particularly loved for its portrayal of a women's hockey team, highlighting the spirit and struggles of its members. Recently, one of the actresses from the film, Vidya Malvade, shared some interesting details about the behind-the-scenes care taken during the shooting of the movie.
Vidya revealed in an interview with a portal that the production team went to great lengths to ensure the comfort of the actresses, especially during their menstrual periods. Recognising the physical demands of the shooting schedule, which often required the actresses to be highly active, Yash Raj Films employed a unique approach to manage this sensitive issue.

The team hired a dedicated individual, affectionately referred to as 'Aunty', whose sole responsibility was to keep track of the menstrual cycles of all 16 actresses on set. This thoughtful initiative ensured that during their periods, the actresses were not required to perform physically strenuous scenes like running, which could be uncomfortable. Vidya pointed out that managing such a large group of women, especially in a physically demanding film, was not an easy task, but this measure helped significantly.
Vidya shared how this 'Aunty' knew exactly when someone was on their period and would adjust the shooting schedule accordingly to avoid any discomfort for the actresses. This care allowed the actresses to perform at their best without having to worry about the physical challenges that might arise from their menstrual cycle.
The support extended beyond just physical comfort. Many of the actresses, some of whom were new to film sets, were provided with a comfortable environment that helped them perform their roles more effectively. This approach by Yash Raj Films not only showcased a forward-thinking attitude towards workplace sensitivity but also set a standard for handling such natural conditions with respect and care in traditionally male-dominated film sets.
Beyond 'Chak De India!', Vidya Malvade continues to be active in the film industry. She was recently seen in the movie 'Starfish' with Khushali Kumar and Milind Soman and has an upcoming film titled 'Ruslaan' where she stars alongside Ayush Sharma. These roles continue to build on her varied career, showcasing her versatility as an actress.
The attention to detail and the compassionate handling of the cast's needs in 'Chak De India!' not only contributed to the film’s success but also left a lasting impact on its cast and crew, demonstrating a blend of empathy and professionalism that other productions could learn from.
