Shyamkanu Mahanta seeks transfer of case to CBI or NIA

The controversy around singer Zubeen Garg’s sudden death has taken yet another sharp turn. Two days after being arrested by the Assam CID’s Special Investigation Team (SIT), Shyamkanu Mahanta has now approached the Supreme Court.

His plea to transfer the case from the Assam SIT to either the CBI or NIA, citing the need for an impartial probe.

The plea also seeks that the FIR filed in connection with Zubeen Garg’s death be moved to another state altogether. Shyamkanu Mahanta’s argument is that the current investigation cannot guarantee fairness.

Arrests and raids deepen the row

Shyamkanu Mahanta, the younger brother of former DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, was arrested on Wednesday along with Zubeen Garg’s manager, Siddharth Sarma. Both men face serious charges after Assam police added murder sections to the FIR.

Earlier in the week, CID teams raided Mahanta’s residence.

Officials claim they seized “incriminating” material—bundles of documents, multiple PAN cards tied to one firm, nearly 30 stamp seals linked to companies and government offices, and papers pointing to alleged benami properties. The findings have only fueled the storm.

On Thursday, the net widened further. Musician Shakharjyoti Goswami and singer Amritprabha Mahanta were also taken into custody in connection with Zubeen Garg’s death

The shock over Zubeen Garg’s passing

For fans, the developments have been gutting. Zubeen Garg, one of Assam’s most celebrated singers, died in Singapore last month under what many call “suspicious circumstances.” His passing at 52 sparked grief across the Northeast and beyond.

Now, with murder charges, high-profile arrests, and raids uncovering questionable documents, the case has turned into one of the most closely watched investigations in recent memory.

Whether the Supreme Court will allow a transfer of the case to the CBI or NIA remains to be seen, but for now, the battle for justice around Zubeen Garg’s death is far from over.
