Gru and his mischievous minions are lighting up the box office this 4th of July with their latest escapade.
Illumination and Universal's 'Despicable Me 4' made a strong debut, grossing $27 million across 4,030 theatres, a bit lower than initial predictions but still impressive. As the weekend progresses, clearer forecasts suggest the film could reach $70 million over three days and $120 million over five days. The franchise’s appeal remains high, with audiences awarding it an A CinemaScore, matching the ratings of the first two films and slightly surpassing the A- of 'Despicable Me 3'. This marks the fifth A grade for the Despicable Me/Minions series.
According to RelishMix, a social media analytics firm, 'Despicable Me 4' has a robust presence across platforms like TikTok, Facebook, X, YouTube, and Instagram, with a combined reach of 641.5 million. This figure is 26% higher than comparable family animated films, though it falls short of the 1.6 billion reach of 'Despicable Me 3' in 2017 and the 668.4 million of 'Minions: The Rise of Gru'. Key cast members such as Sofia Vergara (58.6 million followers), Joey King (37.8 million), Miranda Cosgrove (30.3 million), and Stephen Colbert (29.5 million) significantly contribute to this online buzz.

“Convo on DM4 runs positive, with the long-running franchise having built up an expectation with fans both young and old alike. Some are excited with the promise of the new Mega Minions, a group of superhero hybrid minions that are new to this instalment. One person comments, ‘Despicable Me 4 with some touch of Fantastic 4.’ Others enjoy the breeziness of these movies, not asking much of their audience and divorced from reality in almost every way, especially in the current political epoch with Disney coming under fire for representing the opposite of that creative lifestyle. Another commenter says, ‘This thing will make a billion. One of the rare films I can trust not lecturing me about how to live my life,” RelishMix says.
On its opening Wednesday, 'Despicable Me 4' easily outperformed 'Inside Out 2,' which earned $7.3 million across 4,440 theatres, down 35% from Tuesday, bringing its cumulative total to $496.6 million. The Pixar sequel is poised to surpass the half-billion mark today, setting a record for the fastest animated film to achieve this milestone, previously held by 'Incredibles 2' which took 24 days in 2018. 'Inside Out 2' is projected to earn $31.7 million in its fourth weekend, a 45% drop, and $46.3 million over five days, with a Sunday total of $535.6 million.
In 'Despicable Me 4,' Gru and his family, including Lucy, Margo, Edith, and Agnes, welcome a new member, Gru Jr., who delights in annoying his father. Gru also faces a new adversary, Maxime Le Mal, and his partner Valentina, forcing the family to go on the run.
