For the New York’s Governors Ball festival, Chappell Roan dressed up as a glamorous and dramatic Statue of Liberty costume with her entire body being painted green and her bottom exposed. In one of the many iconic moments during her performance, the ‘Good Luck Babe!’ singer revealed that the White House had offered her an invitation to perform at their Pride event.

“In response to the White House, who asked me to perform for Pride,” Roan said, We want liberty, justice and freedom for all. When you do that, that’s when I’ll come.”

She continued while the crowd cheered her name, “I am in drag of the biggest queen of all. But in case you had forgotten what’s etched on my pretty little toes, ‘Give me your tired, your poor; your huddled masses yearning to breath free,’” quoting the poem written on the 1903 bronze plaque on the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty.

She continued, reportedly tearing up, “That means freedom and trans rights, that means freedom and women’s rights, and it especially means freedom for all people in oppressed. for all oppressed people in occupied territories.”

Roan found herself in a whirlwind of popularity after releasing her pop hit ‘Good Luck Babe!,’ but the hard work for this success had begun years ago. Much like many artists, Roan was also discovered by her covers on YouTube as a 17 year old. The singer signed a record deal with Atlantic Records and moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music. She started her journey as an opening act for Vance Joy.

Roan has always been outspoken about her love for the queer community, of which she is proud to be part of.

“I love the queer community. When queer people are together, it’s the happiest, most vibrant feeling. The shows are a way for me to give a safe space to queer people and to have fun and dress up. It feels like magic on stage. I’m literally getting teary-eyed because it’s everything I ever wanted.”
