Puducherry was left in shock on Sunday after the tragic death of former Miss Puducherry and prominent model San Rechal, who allegedly died by suicide at the age of 26. Known for her outspoken stance against colour discrimination in the fashion and entertainment industry, Rechal’s untimely demise has raised questions about the mental health pressures faced by individuals in the limelight.

Rechal, also known by her other name Shankarapriya, reportedly consumed an overdose of blood pressure medication at her residence in Karamanikuppam after visiting her father.

Initially rushed to a government hospital, she was later transferred to a private hospital before being admitted to the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), where she passed away.

The police have recovered a suicide note in which Rechal stated that no one should be held responsible for her death.

Despite this, authorities have initiated an investigation to determine if there were any contributing factors, including possible marital issues, that may have led to the tragic incident.

San Rechal had recently married and was facing reported financial and emotional distress. Sources indicate that she had sold her jewellery in recent months to fund her career, and had approached her father for financial help. However, he was unable to support her due to his responsibilities towards her brother. These challenges, combined with the pressures of sustaining a public image, may have pushed her to the breaking point.

Rechal rose to fame after being crowned Miss Puducherry in 2022 and later gained further recognition by winning titles such as Miss Dark Queen Tamil Nadu and Miss World in the Black Beauty category. She used her platform to speak boldly against the entrenched bias toward fair skin in Indian media, becoming a voice for dark-skinned women facing discrimination.

Her death has sparked a wave of grief and introspection across social media, with fans and fellow activists remembering her as a courageous and talented woman who stood up for equality and representation. The modelling industry and her supporters mourn not just the loss of a rising star, but of a woman who dared to challenge societal norms.
