Noted producer Ekta Kapoor recently took to Instagram to express her frustration over the commercial failure of Superboys of Malegaon and The Buckingham Murders. Both films received critical acclaim, but neither managed to perform well at the box office. In a series of Instagram stories, Ekta hinted that the real issue might not be the content itself but the Indian audience’s evolving taste in cinema.
Ekta Kapoor Calls Out Audiences for Rejecting Certain Films
Ekta wrote, "“When Indian creators cry that Indian content is not at par with internationally acclaimed TV series n films …. I wonder if it is ego anger or just misplaced Accusations”
Ekta Kapoor, known for her influence in both television and film, questioned whether the lack of success for such movies was due to audiences not being “evolved” enough for such content. She wrote on her Instagram story:
“When superboys of Malegaon n my dear frn Hansal Mehta the Buckingham Murders don’t work in theatres, can we blame the real culprits—the ‘audiences’?”
She further elaborated on her thoughts, stating that rather than outright blaming audiences, it would be more appropriate to say that Indian cinema is still in a phase of growth.
“Since it’s no fun blaming ppl in such abstract terms (can’t bring them down on social Media nA so no fun), let’s just say the major part of India is in its evolutionary stage as far as content is concerned! U can say it’s in its adolescence.”

Audience Reactions: Is It Really the Viewers’ Fault?
Ekta’s comments were met with mixed reactions. While some agreed that Indian audiences might not be fully ready for experimental cinema, others argued that blaming the audience was unfair. Many pointed out that films like 12th Fail, a content-driven film, managed to find success despite not being a conventional commercial entertainer.
One user commented:
“Ok let’s understand one thing that over the years even I have understood that audiences have different tastes. If someone’s taste isn’t Superboys of Malegaon, they won’t watch it regardless of the star cast. Isn’t it your job to make good movies and then let the audience choose what they want to see? This is the same audience that made 12th Fail a hit. If they want to watch a good sex comedy, they’ll watch Fukrey. But if you give them something like Masti or Thank You for Coming, don’t expect them to accept it. Make good films and let them decide where to watch it.”
Following the backlash, Ekta Kapoor doubled down on her stance, but this time, she shifted the blame to corporate studios and streaming platforms. She urged creators to “fight the system” and take matters into their own hands.
“Creators, I urge you to fight the system, these money-hungry corporate studios and apps only think of money (me included) and numbers!”
“Terrible of us Studios and all the apps to treat entertainment like an industry! Movie-making, content creation is not a business. It’s an art, and I want to support art, so I urge creators to put their own money! Problem solved!!!”
