Punjabi singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh, who has become a rage in the nation, is going to be seen as the naive and loveable Amar Singh Chamkila. Imtiaz Ali, who has had hits like Rockstar and Love Aaj Kal, to name a few, is working for the first time with Diljit.

The trailer for the much-awaited movie, which also stars Parineeti Chopra, is set to release on Netflix in April 12, 2024.

The film's trailer begins with Amar Singh Chamkila, a dalit youngster aspiring to be a singer. It also introduces his wife, Amarjot, who is being played by Parineeti Chopra. Director Imtiaz had also revealed earlier that both Diljit and Parineeti sang live for the songs shown in the movie.

Amar Singh Chamkila rose to fame but was criticised by many for his alleged 'vulgar lyrics'. In the trailer too, it is shown how women are also opposed to his songs and the depiction of women in his songs.

Chamkila, who was known as 'Elvis Presley of Punjab', was a folk singer and would often sing in akharas. It was later that someone asked him to have a female singer to attract a larger audience in the akharas, which is when he met his future wife, Amarjot. The movie has been shot at many live locations by Imtiaz, who also revealed at the trailer launch today (March 28) how he met Diljit and finalised him for the role.

Imtiaz told the reporters, "We were thinking about who we act in it. The first name that came up was Diljit Paaji's. But that time somehow we were thinking, maybe he won’t do it, maybe it won’t happen. I even remember talking to Angad (Bedi). Even he said, ‘Why don’t you talk to Diljit?’”

Diljit Dosanjh got emotional at the trailer launch being held today, March 28, while remembering the late singer he plays onscreen.

Chamkila has a lovely rustic score by Oscar winner A. R. Rahman, who was also seen at the launch.

Amar Singh Chamkila was regarded as one of the best live stage performers of his time, and there were days when his shows outnumbered the days in a month. He was always overbooked. He wrote songs about extramarital affairs, drinking, and drugs; this led to many people disliking him.

Chamkila was born as Dhanni Ram on July 21, 1960, into a Ravidas family in Dugri village near Ludhiana, Punjab. He aspired to be an electrician but eventually worked at a mill.

Amar Singh Chamkila and his wife, Amarjot, were gunned down during one of their performances on March 8, 1988. The murder remains unsolved today, and no FIR was also filed at that time.

Chamkila will stream on Netflix from April 12; until then, watch the trailer.
