Celina Jaitly has filed for divorce from her husband, Peter Haag, at an Andheri court in Mumbai, citing domestic violence, emotional cruelty and years of alleged abuse. The actor moved the court earlier this week, and within hours of the news surfacing, she posted a long, emotional note on Instagram describing the isolation and turmoil she says she has endured.
What adds another layer to the case is that Haag had already initiated divorce proceedings in Austria earlier this year. This was confirmed by Niharika Karanjwala Misra from Celina’s legal team, who said Haag’s move came soon after Celina discovered that properties in Vienna were being sold without her knowledge.
According to Misra, Peter Haag is now attempting to establish in the Austrian case that Celina has no legal claim over any of the assets.
The lawyer also alleged that Haag is placing full responsibility for the ‘marriage breakdown’ on Celina, despite her earlier requests that they proceed with a mutual consent divorce for the sake of their children. Misra said Haag refused.
In her petition in Mumbai, the 47-year-old actor has sought Rs 10 lakh per month as maintenance and requested that Haag be restrained from entering her Mumbai residence.
She has also sought custody of their three children, who are currently living with Haag in Austria. Additionally, Celina has demanded Rs 50 crore as compensation for loss of earnings that she says were caused by her husband’s restrictions and interference.
The petition paints a bleak picture of their marriage. Celina has described Haag, 48, as “narcissistic” and “self-absorbed,” alleging that he displayed “no empathy” toward her or their children.
She has accused him of severe emotional, physical, sexual and verbal abuse, and says she was eventually forced to flee their home in Austria and return to India for her safety.
Celina further claimed that after the birth of their children, Haag “prohibited” her from working, leaving her financially dependent and stripped of her autonomy. The projects she did manage to take up, she said, were only those he permitted.
In her Instagram post, Celina wrote: “Life stripped everything away… But the storm did not drown me. It delivered me.” She added that being a soldier’s daughter taught her to fight through unimaginable situations, and that her focus now is on her children, her dignity, and her late soldier brother’s memory.
Celina and Haag married in 2010. They welcomed twin boys in 2012, and another set of twins in 2017, one of whom passed away due to a hypoplastic heart condition.
