Out of 17 seats in Telangana, the News18 exit poll predicts that the NDA will win 7-10 seats, while the INDIA alliance is expected to secure 5-8 seats, and others are projected to win 3-5 seats.
The NDA is anticipated to achieve a 37 percent vote share, the INDIA alliance is expected to receive 34 percent, and others are predicted to get 29 percent.
The Congress in Telangana, led by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, remains a dominant political force in the state, facing rivals TRS and BJP. This time, the BJP has allied with Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP and the Pawan Kalyan-led Jana Sena Party (JSP).
Telangana is strategically significant for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), providing an opportunity to strengthen its presence in Southern India during the 18th Lok Sabha Elections.
Past performance
In the 2019 elections, the Congress won three out of 17 Lok Sabha seats in Telangana, with all three MPs, including Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, winning subsequent assembly elections. The BRS secured nine seats, the BJP claimed four, and AIMIM retained one.
Meanwhile, the BJP made significant progress in Telangana, winning four out of 17 seats and challenging the dominance of the regional Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), formerly known as the Telangana Rashtra Samiti, which had been in power since 2014.
Following the setback in the December 2023 assembly elections, the BJP has emerged as the main competitor against the Congress, led by CM Reddy. Meanwhile, the BRS and its leader, K Chandrashekar Rao (KCR), aim to regain some of their lost influence in Telangana after a decade-long tenure in office. Thus, the competition for the 17 seats should be seen as triangular, with exceptions such as the high-profile Hyderabad constituency.
CM Reddy, who led the Congress to victory in the December assembly elections, faces the challenge of increasing his party's Lok Sabha tally from the current three seats.
Political discourse in 2024
After setbacks in the assembly polls under former state chief Bandi Sanjay, the BJP intensified its national campaign to secure a third term for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Unlike in 2014, when Telangana predominantly favored the BRS, the BJP now eyes to clinch double-digit seats in the state.
Leveraging its nearly 20 percent vote share from 2019, BJP leaders, including PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, actively campaigned in Telangana, addressing issues such as alleged favoritism by the Congress towards minorities and refuting claims regarding alterations to the Constitution and reservations abolition associated with the "Abki Baar 400-paar" slogan. Their campaign emphasises "Modi ki Guarantee," highlighting the inclusive benefits of welfare schemes.
After its victory in the assembly elections, the Congress aims to win at least 12 of Telangana’s 17 Lok Sabha seats, despite failing to secure any of the 24 assembly segments within the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits. The BJP aims for at least 10 seats, with senior leader Amit Shah targeting 10 seats and a 35 percent vote share. The BJP won eight out of 119 seats in the recent assembly elections.
