Maharashtra 2024 Lok Sabha Polls: The nomination of Varsha Gaikwad by the Congress and Ujjwal Nikam by the BJP has set the stage for an interesting electoral contest in the Mumbai North Central Lok Sabha constituency.

The Mumbai North Central Lok Sabha constituency, following the delimitation of parliamentary constituencies in 2008, comprises six Vidhan Sabha constituencies: Vile Parle, Chandivali, Kurla (SC), Kalina, Vandre East, and Vandre West. This constituency has witnessed a fluctuating political landscape over the years, with victories alternating between various political parties, including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress, Shiv Sena, and Republican Party of India (RPI) candidates.

Mumbai North Central Lok Sabha constituency will go to polls on 20 May during Phase 5, and the results will be declared on 4th June.

In 1999, Manohar Joshi from Shiv Sena emerged victorious, while in 1998, Ramdas Athawale from RPI won this seat. Prior to that, in 1996, Narayan Athawale from Shiv Sena and in 1991, Sharad Dighe from Congress secured victories. In 1989, Shiv Sena's Vidyadhar Gokhale won by a narrow margin, while in 1984, Sharad Dighe from Congress emerged victorious. The constituency also saw victories from Pramila Madhu Dandavate of the Janata Party in 1980 and Ahilya Rangnekar from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in 1977.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, BJP's Poonam Mahajan won with 486,672 votes, defeating National Congress Party's Priya Dutt, who secured 356,667 votes. Similarly, in the 2014 elections, Poonam Mahajan of the BJP emerged victorious with 478,535 votes, defeating Congress's Priya Sunil Dutt, who received 291,764 votes.

The nomination of Varsha Gaikwad by the Congress and Ujjwal Nikam by the BJP has set the stage for an interesting electoral contest in the Mumbai North Central Lok Sabha constituency.

Ujjwal Nikam, a senior criminal lawyer with a formidable reputation, is known for his expertise in legal matters and has garnered significant media attention for his role as a special public prosecutor in several sensitive cases. Hailing from Jalgaon in North Maharashtra and belonging to the Maratha community, Nikam's candidacy adds an interesting dimension to the BJP's electoral strategy in Mumbai.

On the other hand, Varsha Gaikwad, the Mumbai unit chief of the Congress party, is a seasoned politician with a strong grassroots connect. As a four-time MLA and former minister, Gaikwad brings extensive experience in public service and administration.
