The Election Commission of India (ECI), on March 27, issued show cause notices to BJP MP Dilip Ghosh and Congress leader Supriya Shrinate regarding their comments targeting West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and BJP's Lok Sabha candidate Kangana Ranaut, respectively. The poll panel stated that the recent remarks by both leaders breached the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) and demanded a response by 5 pm on March 29.
The ECI issued the notice to Congress' Shrinate concerning a social media post regarding Kangana Ranaut, the BJP's face for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from Himachal Pradesh's Mandi.
Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress lodged a complaint on March 26 with the State Election Commission regarding the derogatory remarks made by BJP's Dilip Ghosh against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
“Your attention is drawn towards Mr Ghosh’s derogatory words that is reproduced here: English transcript- When Didi goes to Goa she becomes Goa’s daughter, in Tripura she says I am Tripura’s daughter, decide who is your father, this is not right,” the complaint addressed to chief electoral officer said.
Ghosh issued an apology a day later following the BJP's request for clarification from him, who was recorded laughing at Banerjee's familial background in a purported video clip, as reported by news agency PTI.
