About Candidates
Following the death of BJP MP Girish Bapat, the BJP has fielded former mayor Murlidhar Mohol. The Congress counters with legislator Ravindra Dhangekar, who defeated the BJP in the Kasba assembly bypoll last year. This election pits BJP's Mohol against Congress's Dhangekar, both new faces in a direct contest.
Pune voted on May 13, with turnout increasing to 53.54% from 49.87% in 2019, despite some complaints about missing names from the electoral rolls. The increase of 69,854 votes compared to 2019 will be pivotal.
About Pune
Pune Lok Sabha constituency comprises six assembly segments: Kothrud (BJP's Chandrakant Patil), Pune Cantonment (BJP's Sunil Kamble), Parvati (BJP's Madhuri Misal), Shivajinagar (BJP's Siddharth Shirole), Kasba Peth (INC's Ravindra Dhangekar), and Vadgaon Sheri (NCP's Sunil Tingre).
In 2024, there are 20,53,600 registered voters in Pune, compared to 20,75,824 in 2019. The BJP won the last two Lok Sabha elections here, with Girish Bapat defeating Congress's Mohan Joshi in 2019, and Anil Shirole winning in 2014 by a margin of 315,769 votes against INC's Vishwajeet Kadam. Mohol aims to secure a third consecutive term for the BJP, while Dhangekar seeks to reclaim the seat for Congress.
