As the counting of votes nears end, former Haryana Chief Minister and Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Manohar Lal Khattar is leading in the Karnal constituency of Haryana as per the trends at 10:00 pm. Khattar is currently ahead of Indian National Congress (INC) candidate Divyanshu Buddhiraja.
According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), Khattar is leading with 7,37,090 votes while Buddhiraja is trailing with 5,04,123 votes.
Khattar had resigned from the post of Haryana CM in March and later as an MLA from Karnal assembly constituency amid speculation of split between the BJP and JJP in the state. Congress’ Buddhiraja, on the other hand, is the party’s youth wing president.
The Karnal constituency voted on May 25 in the sixth phase of the elections with a voter turnout of 63.74 percent. Voter turnout in 2024 was 4.61 percent lower than the previous Lok Sabha elections in Karnal. In the Karnal constituency, BJP has had the lead in the last two general elections, i.e. in 2019 and 2014.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, BJP candidate Sanjay Bhatia won the elections with striking 70 percent of the votes while Congress’ Kuldip Sharma secured the second position with around 20 percent votes.
Despite BJP winning all the seats in Haryana in the 2019 general elections, the party BJP faces challenge in the current elections due to dominant Jat community’s angst over farmers’ and wrestlers’ protest.
In the 2014 elections, Ashwini Kumar Chopra of BJP secured around 50 percent votes while Congress’ Arvind Kumar Sharma had 19 percent votes.
Haryana has a total of 10 constituencies including Ambala, Bhiwani, Mahendragarh, Faridabad, Gurgaon, Hisar, Karnal, Kurukshetra, Rohtak, Sirsa and Sonipat. Including Karnal, BJP won all the 10 seats in Haryana in the 2019 polls.
