The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has chosen Rekha Gupta, the MLA from Shalimar Bagh, as their Chief Ministerial candidate for Delhi following a strong win in the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections. The BJP's last Chief Minister of Delhi was Sushma Swaraj, who held the position briefly in 1998.
Rekha Gupta becomes the fourth woman to hold the position of Chief Minister of Delhi. Before her, Sushma Swaraj from the BJP served as Delhi's CM in 1998, Sheila Dikshit from Congress held the post for three terms between 1998 and 2013, and Atishi from AAP took over the role in 2024.
As a first-time MLA, Rekha Gupta is also the only female BJP Chief Minister among the 18 states governed by the BJP-led NDA.
The announcement follows a meeting of the BJP’s Parliamentary Board, during which observers Ravi Shankar Prasad and Om Prakash Dhankar were assigned to oversee the selection process. The 48 newly elected BJP legislators gathered to elect their leader, who will now become Delhi's Chief Minister.
The swearing-in ceremony for the new Chief Minister is scheduled for tomorrow, February 20, at 10 AM at Ramlila Maidan.
