Schools in multiple states will remain closed on Thursday, September 5, 2025, to observe Id-e-Milad (Eid-e-Milad), the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad. The festival is expected to be celebrated on September 5 and 6, 2025, leading to a holiday for educational institutions in several major states. This closure creates a unique scenario as September 5 is also nationally recognized as Teacher's Day.

The decision to declare a holiday for Id-e-Milad is taken by individual state governments. Based on historical precedent and official gazettes, the following states are expected to announce a formal holiday for schools and government offices: Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Additionally, some northeastern states like Sikkim and Manipur may also observe a holiday, as the festival coincides with the local festival of Indrajatra.

common point of confusion is whether Id-e-Milad is a national holiday. The answer is no. Id-e-Milad is a gazetted holiday in India. This means it is officially recognized by the central government, but the decision to declare a public holiday rests with the respective state administrations. Therefore, while schools will be shut in the states listed above, they may function as usual in other parts of the country.

The holiday creates a unique situation for Teacher's Day celebrations. Traditionally, students across India honour their educators with special programs, cultural events and activities on this day.

In states observing the Id-e-Milad holiday, schools are likely to remain closed. Any Teacher's Day festivities in these states would therefore be held on the preceding day, September 4. In states without the holiday, celebrations will proceed as usual on September 5.

To avoid any confusion, it is highly recommended that parents and students confirm the holiday status with their respective school administration.
