IIT Madras has demonstrated remarkable consistency, retaining its crown as the best overall institution in India for the seventh consecutive year. Its reign in the engineering category is even more impressive, extending to a full decade, having secured the top spot every single year since the NIRF rankings were first introduced in 2016.

Building on last year's expansion, the NIRF 2025 rankings have maintained the three new categories introduced in 2024:

  • Open Universities
  • Skill Universities
  • State Funded Government Universities

To ensure a more comprehensive evaluation of India's diverse higher education, the Ministry has introduced a new 'Sustainability Rankings' category. This brings the total to 17 categories, aiming to assess institutions on their environmental and social governance (ESG) initiatives."

How are NIRF Rankings Calculated?

The NIRF framework is a robust methodology that evaluates institutions on five broad parameters:

Teaching, Learning & Resources (TLR): Measures faculty-student ratio, qualification of faculty, and resources available for teaching. This year also includes a focus on courses related to Indian Knowledge Systems.

Research and Professional Practice (RP): Evaluates the research output, quality, and professional academic practices of the institution.

Graduation Outcomes (GO): Assesses the performance of students in university examinations and their placement and higher studies success.

Outreach and Inclusivity (OI): Judges the efforts towards inclusivity and the diversity of the student population.

Perception (PR): Gauges the reputation of the institution among employers and academic peers.

Importance of NIRF Ranking

The NIRF Ranking 2025 serves as an essential guide for lakhs of students and parents making crucial decisions about their academic future. It provides a transparent and data-driven overview of the strengths of institutions across the country, helping them choose the best college for their chosen field of study.
