Foreign exchange reserves held by the Reserve Bank of India were at an equivalent of $630 billion in the last week of January, halting the recent plunge after hitting a 10-month low of $624 billion from two weeks ago, supported by a pullback in the dollar and a more relaxed peg by the RBI. The stabilization of the decline in forex reserves by the central bank was in line with the plunge in the price of the rupee, consistent with the central bank’s signal that it will ease its harsh stance on the defense against a weaker domestic currency.
