Domestic airlines issued travel advisories on May 21 after a massive storm was reported in Delhi and the national capital region.
The region reported heavy rainfall, strong winds and widespread power outages.
Soon after, IndiGo issued an advisory, saying the storm is impacting its flight operations. “Heavy rain and thunderstorm in #Delhi, #Chandigarh and #Kolkata is impacting flights. We understand weather delays are never easy, we sincerely appreciate your patience. Do check your flight status before heading to the airport,” the airline said in a post on X.
Air India too said its operations were impacted because of the storm. The airline asked passengers to check the flight status before reaching the airports.
“Rain and thunderstorms may disrupt flights to/from Delhi this evening. Please check your flight status here https://airindia.com/in/en/manage/flight-status.html before heading to the airport and allow extra time for your journey,” Air India said.
Low-cost airline SpiceJet informed that its flights operating out of Kolkata will be impacted.
“Due to bad weather (thunderstorm with heavy rain) in Kolkata (CCU), all departures/arrivals and their consequential flights may get affected. Additionally, traffic movement to the airport might be affected due to heavy rains. Passengers travelling to the airport are requested to keep a tab on live traffic and plan their journey accordingly,” it said.
The Indian Meteorological Department issued a ‘red alert’ in several districts with predictions of light to moderate rain along with thunderstorm, dust storms and gusty winds. As skies became overcast, heavy rain lashed several parts of the city.
