A 47-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly raping and molesting his two minor daughters in Gurugram, a crime that had gone unreported for years until one of the girls revealed the abuse to her school teacher.
According to The Tribune, the victims are 17 and 12 years old. Police said the elder daughter was abused for nearly six years, while the younger child had suffered for around two.
The case surfaced on September 4 when the younger girl confided in her teacher, saying her father would assault her after consuming alcohol. She also told the teacher that when her mother or sister tried to intervene, he would beat them.
Alarmed by the disclosure, the teacher contacted Udyog Vihar police. Officers then spoke with the children’s mother, who confirmed the allegations but admitted she had remained silent because of fear of her husband and the stigma attached to speaking out. Police said the prolonged ordeal forced the elder daughter to drop out of school.
The accused, who runs a rental business and lives with his family in a village under Udyog Vihar police station’s jurisdiction, was taken into custody on Thursday night. He was produced in court on Friday and sent to judicial custody.
A case has been registered under Sections 6 and 10 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and Section 65 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. A thorough investigation is reportedly underway and both girls will be provided with counselling.
