A week after Y Puran Kumar, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of Haryana, died by suicide at his residence in Chandigarh alleging harassment, another policeman, an assistant sub-inspector, in Rohtak died by suicide on Tuesday.
The deceased, ASI Sandeep Kumar Lathar, left behind a three-page note and a video where he said he was “sacrificing himself to awaken people.”
Video message denies caste angle
In his video, Sandeep alleged that former IG Puran Kumar was “a very corrupt officer” and claimed that the senior officer’s own suicide on October 7 “wasn’t a caste case” but an act “to avoid family humiliation.”
Sandeep also made a series of grave allegations against the late IPS officer. In his video, he said, “Puran Kumar was corrupt. He died because he feared being caught. He had hijacked the system. Women officers were threatened with transfers and even assaulted.”
“My grandfather fought for the country, now his grandson will do the same,” he said, calling himself a follower of Bhagat Singh’s ideals. “I lived honestly and belonged to a farming family. I am not afraid of anything.”
Sandeep’s body was found in a tubewell room at his maternal uncle’s farm in Ladhot village near Rohtak. His service weapon, suicide note, and video were recovered from the spot, which is now being examined by forensic experts.
‘Everything was for sale,’ alleges ASI
In his note and video, the ASI claimed that during Kumar’s tenure as Rohtak IG, “everything was for sale - pay money and get your posting.” He said the truth could be verified through call records and CCTV footage. Sandeep also accused the late officer of using his wife’s position as an IAS officer and his brother-in-law’s political clout to cover up corruption.
Sandeep also praised former SP Narendra Bijarnia, calling him “an honest officer who stood by the truth,” even though Puran Kumar had named both Bijarnia and DGP Shatrujeet Kapur in his own suicide note.
Sandeep urged people not to turn the IPS officer’s death into a caste issue, warning that “the poison of casteism is spreading” and that protests were “destroying the country for corrupt people.”
Tensions rise as villagers protest
Rohtak SP Surender Singh Bhoria described Sandeep as an “honest and hardworking officer” and said police were maintaining a close watch as tension grew between Jat and Dalit groups in the district.
After news of his death spread, members of the Jat community allegedly seized Sandeep’s body and refused to perform his last rites, demanding the arrest of IAS officer Amneet P Kumar, wife of late IPS officer Y Puran Kumar.
