Surya Grahan September 2025: Last Solar Eclipse Date, Timings, Visibility and How to Watch

This rare astronomical event is also called the Equinox Solar Eclipse; it will occur just a day before the September equinox. During this eclipse, the sun will appear as a bright crescent, creating a spectacular sight for skywatchers across certain regions of the globe. This year, the world will witness the last solar eclipse on September 21.

Equinox Solar Eclipse 2025: Date and Time

The September equinox falls on September 22, 2025, at 2:19 pm EDT (18:19 UTC). However, the partial solar eclipse will begin a day earlier, on September 21, 2025, starting at 1:29 pm EDT (17:29 UTC) and lasting until 5:53 pm EDT (21:53 UTC). This overlap of an eclipse and the equinox within 24 hours makes the event a rare celestial phenomenon.

Surya Grahan 2025: When and Where to watch

The best views of the September 2025 solar eclipse will be in:

  • Ross Sea, Antarctica: Up to 86% of the sun will be covered.
  • Southern New Zealand (Dunedin): Sunrise at 6:27 am NZST will already show the eclipse, reaching 72% coverage about 40 minutes later.
  • Auckland, New Zealand: Sunrise at 6:10 am NZST will reveal a partially eclipsed sun.
  • South Pacific (Fiji and Tonga): A smaller partial eclipse will be visible.
  • Hobart, Australia: A 3% partial eclipse will appear just after sunrise at 6:00 am AEST.

Note: Unfortunately, the solar eclipse 2025 will not be visible in India.

How to Watch the Solar Eclipse Safely?

Since this is a partial solar eclipse, the sun will not be fully covered. To view it safely:

  • Always wear certified solar eclipse glasses.
  • Avoid looking directly at the sun without protection, as it can cause serious eye damage.
  • Do not use regular sunglasses or homemade filters.

After this, the next solar eclipse will occur on February 17, 2026. It will be an annular solar eclipse, creating the famous “ring of fire” effect, lasting up to 2 minutes and 20 seconds.
