Raksha Bandhan, a sacred festival that celebrates the unique bond between brothers and sisters, will be observed this year on Saturday, 9th August 2025. It falls on the full moon day (Purnima) of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Shravan, according to the Hindu calendar.

On this auspicious day, sisters tie a Raksha Sutra or Rakhi on their brothers’ wrists, wishing them long life, happiness, and protection from harm. In return, the brothers promise to protect their sisters always, taking the Rakhi as a sacred symbol of their vow.

Traditional Rituals of Raksha Bandhan

Before tying the Rakhi, certain rituals and spiritual preparations are performed:

• A Swastika symbol is drawn on both sides of the main door using red ochre (geru) or red roli.
• The names of Radha and Krishna are written above or near the Swastika symbols.
• Offerings of sweets are made to the Swastika and the deities' names.
• Water from a copper vessel is sprinkled around the house to purify the space.
• Only after these rituals, the Rakhi ceremony begins, ensuring that it is conducted in a spiritually positive and auspicious environment.
• It is crucial to avoid tying Rakhi during Bhadra and Rahu Kaal, as these times are considered inauspicious in Vedic astrology.

When a Brahmin ties a Raksha Sutra on a devotee or Yajman, he chants a sacred Raksha Mantra, which conveys the following meaning:

"I tie you with the same sacred thread that once bound the mighty king Bali. O Raksha Sutra, remain steady and unwavering in your purpose."

This mantra signifies a commitment to righteousness (Dharma). The Raksha Sutra is not just a protective thread—it is a spiritual reminder to uphold moral duty and resist negativity.
