GALLE (Reuters) - Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim became his country's highest scorer in test cricket when he went to lunch unbeaten on 198 on the fourth day of the first test against Sri Lanka on Monday.
Rahim overtook team mate Mohammad Ashraful's 190 that came in the same innings as Bangladesh reached 546 for five in reply to Sri Lanka's first innings total of 570 for four declared with five sessions of play left in the test that appears heading for a draw.
Rahim went through a few anxious moments in the final over before lunch as he tried to get to his double hundred and had a close call when a delivery from Shaminda Eranga rapped him on the pads prompting a stifled appeal.
Rahim has faced 317 balls, hitting 22 fours and a six. Nasir Hossain remained unbeaten on 61 at the lunch break, having added 103 runs with his captain for the sixth wicket.
Rahim shared a Bangladesh record of 267 for any wicket with Ashraful who added only one run to his overnight score of 189 before he lost his patience and wicket.
Ashraful came down the track to hoist a Rangana Herath delivery and only succeeded in edging a catch to Angelo Mathews at slip.
It was a disappointing end to Ashraful's marathon 417-ball knock which included 20 fours and a six.
Next man in Nasir Hossain also capitalised on perfect batting conditions to help himself to a fluent unbeaten half-century.
