The Nifty closed flat after trading lacklustre for the entire session. Some buying was seen in IT, banks and FMCG stocks. However, pharma, oil & gas auto and power stocks traded lower. Reliance, L&T, HDFC, ITC and NTPC were the negative contributors to the bourses.
The Sensex ended up 7.71 points or 0.05% at 17134.55. It touched an intraday high of 17,195.61 and an intraday low of 17,059.36.
The Nifty closed down 6.95 points or 0.14% at 5077. It touched an intraday high of 5110.50 and an intraday low of 5057.05.
The markets breadth was negative, about 1177 shares advanced, 1713 shares declined, and 320 shares were unchanged.
Vineet Bhatnagar, Managing Director of MF Global, saw resistance for the Nifty at 5,150-5,200 levels while he saw support for it at 4,880-4,920 levels. He said that investors could keep their Nifty long positions open.
Manishi Raychaudhuri of BNP Paribas Securities said he expected earnings upgrades in engineering, construction, autos and Information Technology. He added that the liquidity driven rally would still continue for a while.
Technical Analyst Ashwani Gujral was bullish on Indian Overseas Bank (IOB), Jindal Saw, Bharti Airtel, Bhushan Steel and Yes Bank. He advised investors to buy these stocks. - Click here for more details
Top gainers on the Sensex were Bharti Airtel at Rs 435.35 up 4.01%, Reliance Comm at Rs 318 up 3.25%, ICICI Bank at Rs 924.45 up 2.17%, TCS at Rs 631.95 up 2.03% and M&M at Rs 891.25 up 1.14.
Top losers on the Sensex were Maruti Suzuki at Rs 1,651 down 2.82%, HDFC at Rs 2,699.15 down 2.8%, Grasim at Rs 2,700.80 down 2.44%, Tata Power at Rs 1,290.65 down 2.18% and Hero Honda at Rs 1,634.45 down 2.11%.
Most active shares on NSE were Bharti Airtel at Rs 434.65 with a volumes of 33,839,660, ICICI Bank at Rs 921.10 with a volumes of 8,452,092, Reliance at Rs 2,173.05 with a volumes of 2,988,156, SBI at Rs 2,211 with a volumes of 2,908,744 and Educomp Sol at Rs 4,896 with a volumes of 1,078,743.
Top percentage losers on the BSE - Omkar Overseas, KBS Capital, Central Bank, Tinplate and Magma Fincorp were up 7-10%.
Top percentage gainers on the NSE - Tainwala Chem, Bajaj Auto Fin, JSL, Todays Writing and Cera Sanitary were up 14-20%.
Top gainers on the BSE Midcap were Rolta at Rs 190.05 up 7.28%, Bajaj Holdings at Rs 540.55 up 5.88%, Pidilite Ind at Rs 153.75 up 5.67%, Educomp Sol at Rs 4,934.60 up 5.15% and Edelweiss Cap at Rs 504.65 up 5.11%.
Top gainers on the BSE Smallcap were Bajaj Auto Fin at Rs 286.20 up 20%, JSL at Rs 100.25 up 17.66%, JSW Holdings at Rs 1,839.90 up 13.91%, Ashtavinayak at Rs 83.20 up 12.13% and 3i Infotech at Rs 98.75 up 11.96%.
Turnover: The market saw total turnover of Rs 81006.15 crore. This included Rs 20111.83 crore from the NSE cash segment, Rs 54343.16 crore from the NSE F&O and the balance Rs 6551.16 crore from the BSE cash segment.
In the IT space,, NIIT, Rolta, TCS, Aptech and Tech Mahindra were up 1-7%.
Banking stocks like Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, Union Bank, PNB and SBI were up 1-3%.
In the FMCG sector, Nestle, Godrej Consumer, United Spirits, HUL and Dabur India were up 1-5%.
Metal stocks like Ispat Industries, JSW Steel, Jindal Saw, Jindal Steel and Sesa Goa were up 1-5%. In the phrama pack, Dishman Pharma, Dr Reddys Labs, Wockhardt, Sun Pharma Adv and Orchid Chemical were down 3-5%.'
Auto stocks like Maruti Suzuki, Hero Honda, MRF, Tata Motors and Ashok Leyland lost 1-3%.
In the oil sector, HPCL, BPCL, IOC, Reliance and RNRL were down 1-3%. In the power pack, Torrent Power, Tata Power, GVK Power, NTPC and Reliance Infra were down 1-4%.
Capital Goods stock like AIA Engineering, SKF India, Punj Lloyd, Walchandnagar and Praj Industries were down 2-4%.
